Visitors to Kilauea who are expecting to see its iconic flowing lava and glowing craters, however, may be disappointed right now. The volcano, which had been erupting since 1983, stopped erupting on May 26. Mauna Loa hasn't erupted since 1984.
Although volcanic activity is an undeniable draw, the park has plenty more to offer. Visitors can hike, bike or drive around the park to view its historic sites and endangered flora and fauna. Be sure to stop at Nahuku (also known as the Thurston Lava Tube), a cave-like tube that ends in a tropical rainforest.
