| I don't know about your house, but ours is suddenly filled with two boys who have finished or are just about to finish school for the year. A strange, strange year for sure. I'm still not sure what they learned, as their world (especially our middle-schooler, who didn't get much in-person schooling this year) shrunk to the size of our house, our family and a few friends. Zoom school certainly can't replace bumping into kids in hallways they normally wouldn't connect with, the messy-funny, angsty middle school cafeteria, recess with friends and teammates. I can't help but think about all the life learning that goes on in those spaces that students missed out on this year: meeting and talking with students who aren't like them, whose backgrounds are different, who learn differently. That's partly why I was interested in this piece, which focuses on a path to ensuring kids do get that learning in school – by hiring an equity and inclusion coach. It's an attempt, as the story says, to do better together. It's that learning together, living for a few hours together, with students and teachers not necessarily just like them, that makes me excited already to get them back to school – in person – in the fall.
