| Well, it has been a week, hasn't it? Juneteenth was finally declared a federal holiday yesterday, though many states already celebrated the day that marks the end of slavery in the U.S. It is a perfect time to talk to your kids about racism, how Black people were once enslaved, and how that has impacted and continues to impact our country. There is so much for them to process, and it's good for parents to be by their sides as they come to understand the significance of the day, of slavery, of injustice. I loved speaking with Khadijah Booth Watkins, a psychiatrist and associate director for the Clay Center for Young Healthy Minds at Massachusetts General Hospital, about how and why to discuss Juneteenth with your kids. And, of course, I can't sign off here without a shout-out to dads and this upcoming weekend. This week, we ran a piece about a man who isn't yet a dad, and how this holiday can be so difficult for many. We also have a profile of the "Internet Dad" (just watch a few of his videos for some warm and fuzzies -- and great DIY tips). I spoke with Jordan Shapiro about his interesting new book, "Father Figure: How to be a Feminist Dad," and we have a lovely essay about fatherhood and memories today to cap it all off. So, happy Juneteenth to all. And happy Father's Day to those who celebrate -- wishing the best to those for whom this day hits hard. |
