Christopher A. Coons (D-Del.) argues that an emerging bipartisan agreement to spend $1 trillion on infrastructure is needed to show the rest of the world that American democracy is not broken.  "China and Russia are telling the world that democracy and capitalism are in decline and their model of authoritarianism is superior at meeting the needs of their citizens," he writes. "People in other countries are starting to believe it. We need to show citizens here at home — and around the globe — that our democracy can still deliver meaningful solutions." Coons acknowledges that some in his own party fear that the emerging infrastructure deal might limit what else Democrats can accomplish this year. But he concludes: "Nothing will showcase that the United States is back like seeing Republicans and Democrats coming together around a bold infrastructure package that will make us more competitive."
