| Most Americans, it seems, are done with the pandemic. And I don't blame them, especially those who have already been vaccinated. Daily reported cases are down to levels not seen since March of last year. Deaths and hospitalizations are steadily falling, too. But before we get too comfortable, take a moment to read the latest from epidemiologist Ashish Jha, who warns that the new delta variant of the coronavirus is "a profoundly concerning threat." The variant, he writes, is more contagious, more deadly and more infectious among people with immunity than any other variant. "We are entering a time when being unvaccinated is going to become exceedingly more dangerous. Society is open. Distancing is a thing of the past, and mask-wearing is declining. All of the public health protections that kept unvaccinated people safe are disappearing, but the delta variant is gaining momentum." The only way to stop it is, yes, to vaccinate more people. Let's get the job done. 15-year-old Marc Bugarin is vaccinated in San Pedro, Calif., last month.
