| Another NHL season is over, another layer of dust falls on Canada's trophy shelf where the Stanley Cup is supposed to go. With the Tampa Bay Lightning zapping the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup finals this week, sportswriter Stu Cowan says, it will have been 28 years since the last time a Canadian franchise prevailed. The explanation for this drought goes well beyond the simple fact that there are now 25 teams based in the United States (hello, Seattle Kraken, newcomers for 2021-2022) and seven in Canada. The NHL salary cap has leveled the, er, skating surface, and then there's the attraction for players of living in sunshine states with lower taxes. Cowan also notes that in, say, Anaheim or Dallas, "there isn't the sort of pressure that comes with playing in a Canadian city, where every move, both on and off the ice, is scrutinized by fans and media." The best players tend to stay put. "Hockey is still Canada's game," he says, "but the Stanley Cup has been on an awfully long road trip."
