Ron Charles on Bog Pond in Andover, N.H. on Aug. 1, 2021. (Photo by Madeline Charles) | Ron Charles is writing to you in the third person this week because he can't get a stable WiFi signal on the Black Water Bog. He's on vacation with his family in New Hampshire celebrating a slate of birthdays (his two daughters, brother and mother). But just because Ron's pretending to take some time off doesn't mean you have to miss all the great book coverage in The Washington Post. Below, you'll find more than a dozen reviews covering the latest novels, short stories, memoirs, biographies, histories and audiobooks. Meanwhile, the Charles family hopes your summer is providing a chance to hide out with some good books. Dawn is enjoying Dana Spiotta's "Wayward." Madeline is absorbed in Tomi Adeyemi's "Children of Blood and Bone" (Jimmy Fallon loved it, too). And Ron is sneaking in a little work by reading Sheng Keyi's "Death Fugue," a highly symbolic apocalyptic novel banned in China, which he'll tell you about when he gets home. If you have any questions or comments about The Washington Post's book coverage, send a note to ron.charles@washpost.com. (He'll respond when he gets home.)
