As U.S. diplomats hunkered inside, thousands of desperate Afghans thronged Kabul airport where five people were killed on Monday. In a televised address, Biden acknowledged there were concerns about why Afghans had not been evacuated earlier, but said his administration had been discouraged to do so by the Afghan government at the time.
    ...
"Part of the answer is some of the Afghans did not want to leave earlier, still hopeful for their country," Biden said. But five [anonymous] U.S. officials told Reuters that weeks before the Washington-backed Afghan government collapsed, the U.S. military wanted a bigger role in helping to evacuate Afghans at risk because they worked for the U.S.
    ...
The officials believe that a more orderly withdrawal would have been likely. HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

" Yes - Could it have been? Sure. This is clearly linked to U.S. troop withdrawals, and the lack of pressure put on the Taliban over the last 20 years. A better question would be "Could it have been prevented while still withdrawing U.S. troops?" That answer is much more complicated, and to be honest requires a knowledge of the region and military tactics used there that I, and frankly most Americans, simply don't have. "

" No - As some Taliban commander said quite a few years back when he was asked if they would ever be able to defeat the US, he replied, we don't have to defeat them - j..."

" Unsure - Perhaps it *could* have been prevented, but a totally different strategy was required from the very start. The strategy that was used involved physical..."
