| Baradar, a chief Taliban negotiator and head of the group's political office, arrived Tuesday in the southern city of Kandahar for the first time since the insurgents swept to power in a stunning offensive over the weekend. Baradar, a founding member of the Taliban, was released from prison in Pakistan in 2018 at the request of the U.S. government so that he could serve as the group's leader in peace talks. As the face of the Taliban, he addressed the nation in a recorded video statement from Doha, Qatar, on Sunday. |
