| As the Taliban continues to capture cities and provinces in Afghanistan, many women activists are facing grave dangers. "Women are being told they can't leave their homes without a male guardian; some have been flogged in the streets; some have been killed. Hundreds of women journalists, activists and judges have been assassinated in recent years," write Melanne Verveer and Tanya Henderson. That's why they are calling on the Biden administration to implement urgent measures to protect these women. They include chartering direct evacuation flights, redirecting millions of dollars to assist persons who are relocating and seeking asylum, starting a special parole program for women human rights defenders, politicians and journalists, and immediately establishing a high-level interagency refugee coordinator to manage refugee processing and relocation. "The U.S. government justified its invasion of Afghanistan partly on the basis of women's rights and invested heavily in Afghan women to build a democratic society," Verveer and Henderson write.
