| In the past couple of weeks, we've published several pieces highlighting the plight of vulnerable Afghans desperately seeking ways out of the country — journalists, an all-girl robotics team, a group of female mountaineers. Charles Lane points to another community that should get attention: the hundreds of young women who were students at the American University of Afghanistan, but have now "destroyed documents that identify them as such for fear of discovery by the Taliban." The university has been targeted by the Taliban before, including in a 10-hour raid by terrorists in 2016 which left 15 people dead. It rebuilt and reopened less than a year later. Now, the entire campus has fallen into Taliban hands — and the university community has been forced to flee. Out of the 1,200-person community, just 50 have managed to escape, according to Leslie Schweitzer, president of Friends of the American University of Afghanistan, a U.S. nonprofit. "The United States is treating itself to political arguments over what went wrong in Afghanistan," Lane writes. But "however misconceived or mismanaged U.S. efforts in Afghanistan might have been … real people — flesh-and-blood human beings — staked their lives on this country's promises. We dare not betray them now." (Lorenzo Tugnoli/For The Washington Post) The women — and men — of the American University of Afghanistan must be rescued.
