Gavin Newsom's trouncing victory on Tuesday, many on the left attempted to tease out what political lessons, if any, could be wrought from the election for the upcoming midterms. Karen Tumulty had a different takeaway: Something is seriously wrong here. "Such a radically undemocratic exercise should never have happened," she writes in her latest column. She also notes, "There is little reason to be hopeful that Republicans will be chastened by the walloping they got on Tuesday." Sure, that's a downer, but Democrats celebrating the win could use the message. Increasingly what is at stake in our elections is fidelity to democracy and the basic concept of majority rule.
