| Desheena Kyle. Jelani Day. Jennifer Caridad. Aubrey Dameron. Gabby Petito. If only one of these names sounds familiar to you, that's no surprise. Because only one of these missing women is White. Gabby Petito's disappearance, and the subsequent discovery of her death, sparked a viral national outcry and intensive search. These other women, not so much. As columnist Karen Attiah writes about the latest of our "regular, feverish bouts" of "missing White girl syndrome," Black, Latino, Native and other marginalized people whose loved ones disappear in America too often have no choice but to take matters into their own hands — "law enforcement and media help often comes too little, too late." Here is one chilling statistic to drive her point home: Black people account for a third of active missing persons cases in the FBI database, but just 13 percent of the population. When, Attiah prods us to consider, was the last time you heard about any of them? All of us, in the media, and as "digital citizens," need to do better.
