She is not new to attacks against her — she's faced thousands of rape and death threats online for years because of her work.   But now tax authorities in India — a U.S. ally often hailed as a "vibrant democracy" — is investigating Ayyub over a fundraising campaign to help victims of the coronavirus.  Ayyub has been a vocal critic of the pandemic mismanagement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. And that's why she believes she's facing a police investigation that began with a complaint by a Hindu nationalist group that failed to provide any real evidence. "I've been asked questions about my 'international connections' and the supposed large sums of money I receive for writing for international publications," Ayyub writes. "Over the past month I've barely written or reported, since all my energy has gone to battling the latest accusations and clearing my name. I guess that was always the goal." With Modi visiting the United Nations and the White House this week, it is time to hold him accountable for his increasingly authoritarian tactics.
