As he set the ground rules for the trial [of Kyle Rittenhouse, who faces multiple charges for allegedly gunning down two men during 2020's unrest], Kenosha County Circuit Judge Bruce Schroeder said that the label "victim" is a "loaded word" and that even the use of "alleged victim" is too close, telling prosecutors that "complaining witness" or "decedent" are acceptable alternatives.
    ...
Schroeder, however, ordered that other words could be used — "rioters," "looters" or "arsonists" — if Rittenhouse's defense attorneys can provide the evidence that they had engaged in those acts.
    ...
While legal experts and lawyers familiar with state laws say Schroeder is well within his authority to set boundaries on language, his rule sets the stage for further scrutiny in a highly charged trial that has captured national attention. "That's pretty standard in his courtroom to not allow 'victim,'" said Ted Kmiec, a local criminal defense lawyer.

Do you support the proposed "billionaire's tax?"

679 votes, 125 comments

Context: Democrats propose 'billionaire tax' that includes taxing unrealized capital gains.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

" No - This could easily be turned on the "regular" citizen as many laws end up. Taxing unrealized gains on the average taxpayer will result in a heavy tax burden and could severely impact retirement savings amongst other forms of income/investment. As always, billionaires will be able to afford tax attorneys that find ways around these taxes, while the ordinary taxpayer will face the brunt of the tax."

" Yes - Normal people are already taxed on their yearly savings gains outside of stock market retirement accounts, and businesses are..."

" Unsure - On one hand, it seems like a good way to close some of the loopholes that allow the ultra wealthy to hoard money and evade taxes, and ..."
