A dazzling and exquisitely fun story that goes down as well as a glass of champagne. Granados expertly captures the hope (or maybe naivety?) of being a young twenty-something in 2013. Isa Epley has just jumped the pond to meet her best friend, Gala Novak, in New York City. The girls are glamorously broke, relying on the meager sales from the market stall where they sell clothes to fund their late-night escapades. Told via Isa's diary entries, we get a scathing and incredibly witty look at a sweltering summer of meeting the city's socialites, from social media influencers to artists to "entrepreneurs."
Nothing really happens in this book, but the lack of plot is more than made up for by Isa's hilarious and yet thought provoking narration. As a person of color and immigrant, she navigates the city differently than her best friend, Gala. Isa's voice is unique: she's oddly genuine, smarter than she lets on, and someone you would probably love to hate, but can't quite bring yourself to. As I followed the girls on their own journey through New York City, I couldn't help but want an adventure like that of my own. One so full of young optimism that the idea of failing doesn't even occur to them. It's truly a book to get lost within. Bonus points if you listen to the audiobook; Bronwyn Szabo's narration is brilliant. Get your copy now. —Kirby Beaton More From BuzzFeed |
