| Recent headlines make for grim reading for President Biden's party. Falling poll numbers, slim majorities in Congress and major bills hanging in the balance are all feeding the media narrative that Democrats are doomed. Not so fast, argues columnist Eugene Robinson: "There's always some truth in The Narrative but rarely an abundance of perspective." First, barring a surprise in the Senate, Washington remains in Democratic hands until 2023. There remains plenty of time to pass big legislation. But more broadly, Robinson argues, "the Democratic Party, for better or worse, has to represent the entirety of the sane political spectrum, from Sens. Joe Manchin III (W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema (Ariz.) on the right to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and the Squad on the left. ... I can't recall another time when one of our political parties has so lost its way — and its mind — leaving the other to do all the serious work of governing. And one of The Narrative's weaknesses is an inability to deal with novel situations." In most Congresses, there comes a moment when it seems the majority party is lost. But that frequently turns out to not be the case. It's a long way until the midterms. And regardless, Robinson concludes, Democrats have no choice but to go it alone.
