| Much of the campaign centered on a spike in crime and how and whether to fund the police department, an issue driven by the May 25, 2020, murder of Floyd at the hands of city police. Although Minneapolis mayoral elections are officially nonpartisan, all of the major candidates were members of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, the state's Democratic Party equivalent. No Republican has been elected mayor since 1957. Minneapolis uses a ranked-choice election system. |
