U.S. officials took strong exception Monday after Russia fired a missile at one of its own satellites over the weekend, scattering debris across a part of space where other satellites normally operate.
Moscow's provocative demonstration, writes Post columnist David Ignatius, is another sign of how fraught the space-based brinkmanship among Russia, the United States and China is becoming.
Ignatius spent part of Monday at the Pentagon offices of the new U.S. Space Force, where he interviewed its commander, Gen. John W. "Jay" Raymond.
"The Russian test this past weekend underlines that need for better consultation about space — the equivalent of the 'hotline' that Russia and America adopted after the near disaster of the 1962 Cuban missile crisis," David writes. "The idea of space as a contested domain, without common rules or communication, is chilling."
