While rain is indeed forecast for the UK's May bank holiday weekend, it is not expected to be a total washout. Instead, the weather will be changeable, featuring a mix of rain, wind, and occasional sunny spells across the country. This shift marks a significant change from the prolonged dryness and sunshine experienced during much of meteorological spring. 

Here's a breakdown of what to expect:

• Saturday (May 24): The day will begin with a band of rain sweeping eastwards across the UK, which will gradually clear. There will be patchy rain and drizzle, particularly affecting western upland areas, where mist and fog might also linger. Central and eastern regions may enjoy some brighter spells, with eastern Scotland expected to see the best of the sunshine. It will feel warm, with temperatures climbing into the low 20s Celsius, which is above average for this time of year. However, later in the afternoon, more persistent and heavier rain is expected to arrive from the west, affecting Northern Ireland, Wales, and southwest England first, and then sweeping across all areas overnight. Winds will also strengthen, bringing a risk of coastal gales in the north, with gusts potentially reaching 50mph in some northern areas.   

• Sunday (May 25): Early rain will clear eastwards, giving way to a day of sunny spells and blustery showers. These downpours will be most frequent and intense across western Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England, where hail and thunder are possible. Conversely, the south and southeast of England may experience a good deal of dry weather. Winds will remain strong across much of the UK, with a continued risk of gales in parts of northern Scotland. Temperatures will be near or a little below average, feeling cooler than recent weeks, with highs around 15°C in Scotland and 21-22°C in the south of England. There's also a risk of cold temperatures, even frost, in low single figures overnight into Monday morning, particularly for gardeners.   

• Bank Holiday Monday (May 26): The unsettled weather will continue with a mix of widespread blustery showers and bright spells. Showers will be heaviest and most frequent across the north and west of the country, including Scotland and Northern Ireland. Despite the cloud and showers, there will still be some drier, sunnier moments. Temperatures will feel slightly milder in Scotland and Northern Ireland compared to Sunday, and while eastern coasts will be chilly due to onshore winds, sheltered, sunny spots could still feel pleasantly warm. Strong winds will persist across many areas of the UK.   

This period of rain will be welcome news for some, as the UK has been at a medium risk of drought this summer following one of the driest springs in over a century. However, authorities note that this rainfall is unlikely to be enough to fully replenish river levels.
