The qualification round, originally slated for a later slot, was brought forward by a full day as officials raced to beat a forecast of adverse weather. Under the two-run format, where only a rider’s single best score counts, Su Yiming demonstrated a calm, calculated approach. In his opening run, he posted a solid 70.83 points, providing a safety net that allowed him to push harder in his second attempt.
During his second run, Su sharpened his execution, improving his score to 72.78. This performance placed him eighth overall in a stacked field, safely within the top 12 qualifying spots required for the final. While he trailed the leader, New Zealand’s Dane Menzies (86.06), Su’s primary objective was clear: survive the qualification phase and gather intelligence on the course and the judges' scoring.
"I really enjoyed competing today. This is the mindset I should have," Su said following the event. He noted that the slopestyle atmosphere felt different from the Big Air competition earlier in the Games, where he felt a higher level of pressure as the defending champion. "Today the main goal was to make the final and better understand the judges' scoring criteria so I can prepare more precisely."
