The Tragic Killing of Joanna Simpson
On Halloween night in 2010, the lives of a wealthy Ascot family were changed forever. Robert Brown, then a 47-year-old British Airways pilot, arrived at the home of his estranged wife, Joanna Simpson, to drop off their two young children. Amidst a bitter and acrimonious divorce battle, Brown attacked Joanna with a claw hammer while their children, aged nine and ten, cowered in a nearby playroom. According to court reports, Brown struck Joanna at least 14 times with heavy force.
The brutality of the crime was matched by Brown’s calculated actions following the attack. He loaded Joanna’s body into the boot of his car, dropped his children off at his home, and then drove to a remote area of woodland in Windsor Great Park. There, he buried Joanna in a makeshift coffin—a plastic garden box—inside a hole he had pre-dug weeks earlier. To further cover his tracks, he returned to the family home to remove the CCTV recording unit. The following morning, he made a 999 call to report a "domestic issue," eventually leading police to the burial site after days of "no comment" interviews.
The Trial and Controversial Verdict
In May 2011, Robert Brown stood trial at Reading Crown Court. While he admitted to the killing and to obstructing a coroner, he pleaded not guilty to murder. His defense team argued that he was suffering from a mental health condition known as "adjustment disorder," brought on by the stress of the couple's divorce and a dispute over a prenuptial agreement. Brown claimed he had been "stitched up" by the agreement, which protected Joanna’s significant family wealth.
The jury ultimately acquitted Brown of murder but found him guilty of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. He was sentenced to 24 years for manslaughter and an additional two years for preventing a lawful burial, totaling a 26-year prison sentence. The verdict was a devastating blow to Joanna’s family, who maintained that the killing was cold, calculated, and pre-meditated, citing the pre-dug grave as evidence of his intent.
Where is Robert Brown Now?
As of 2024, Robert Brown remains behind bars, though his legal status has been the subject of intense government intervention and public debate. Under the sentencing laws at the time of his conviction, Brown was due for automatic release on license in November 2023, having served exactly half of his 26-year sentence.
However, following a relentless campaign by Joanna Simpson’s mother, Diana Parkes, and her best friend, Hetti Barkworth-Nanton, Justice Secretary Alex Chalk intervened. In October 2023, Chalk used new legal powers under the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 to block Brown’s automatic release. The case was instead referred to the Parole Board for a full risk assessment. The Justice Secretary stated that Brown posed a "significant risk of serious harm to the public."
