Amazon Tracking Number Not Showing Up

Amazon Tracking Number Not Showing Up: Reasons and Easy Solutions

Shopping on Amazon is known for its convenience and speed. One of the most satisfying parts of the experience is watching your package move from the warehouse to your doorstep in real-time. However, it can be quite alarming when you check your order history only to find that the Amazon tracking number is not showing up. This situation can lead to anxiety, especially if you have purchased an expensive item or a gift needed for a specific deadline.

While Amazon's logistics system is one of the most advanced in the world, there are several logical reasons why a tracking number might be missing. Understanding how Amazon processes shipments and how different carriers interact with their platform can help you stay calm and take the right steps to locate your package. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore why tracking information disappears or fails to appear and provide actionable steps to resolve the issue.

Common Reasons Your Amazon Tracking Number Is Missing

There are several scenarios where a tracking number might not be immediately visible in your "Returns & Orders" section. Here are the most frequent causes:

1. The Order Is Still Processing

The most common reason is simply time. Even if you have received an order confirmation email, the warehouse may still be "picking and packing" your items. A tracking number is typically generated only when the shipping label is printed and the carrier scans the package for the first time. If you just placed your order a few hours ago, it is perfectly normal for the tracking details to be absent.

2. Third-Party Seller Limitations (FBM)

Amazon hosts millions of third-party sellers. Some of these sellers fulfill orders themselves (Fulfilled by Merchant or FBM) rather than using Amazon’s warehouses. Small-scale sellers might use standard postal services that do not offer digital tracking, or they might delay uploading the tracking number until they physically drop the package off at the post office.

3. Standard or Low-Cost Shipping Methods

If you opted for the cheapest possible shipping or if the item is very small (like a decal, a single greeting card, or a screen protector), it may be sent via standard mail. Standard postage often does not include a tracking ID to keep shipping costs low for both the seller and the buyer.

4. Software Glitches or Syncing Delays

Sometimes, the carrier has the package and has assigned a tracking number, but the data hasn't "synced" with Amazon’s interface yet. There can be a lag of several hours between a package being scanned at a UPS or FedEx facility and that information reflecting on the Amazon website or app.

Understanding Amazon Tracking Statuses

To better understand why your information is missing, it helps to look at the current status of your order. Below is a breakdown of what different statuses mean regarding your tracking ID.

Status/Aspect	Tracking Availability
Pending Order	No tracking available; Amazon is verifying your payment method.
Preparing for Shipment	Tracking is being generated but is not yet active or viewable.
Shipped	Tracking should be visible, but may take 24 hours to update.
International Shipping	Tracking may stop once the package leaves the origin country until it clears customs.
Amazon Logistics (TBA)	Internal tracking that is usually only viewable within the Amazon app.

Steps to Take When Tracking Information Is Missing

If your package is marked as "Shipped" but the tracking number is nowhere to be found, follow these troubleshooting steps:

Check Your Email Confirmation

Amazon sends a "Your order has shipped" email for every package. Frequently, this email contains a direct link to the carrier’s website or includes the tracking number in the text body, even if the website UI is having trouble displaying it. Check your spam folder if you don’t see it in your inbox.

Contact the Third-Party Seller

If your order is fulfilled by a merchant, you can contact them directly. Go to your orders, click on the seller's name, and select "Ask a question." Most sellers are happy to provide a tracking number manually if it failed to upload to the system automatically.

Wait 24 to 48 Hours

If your order status just changed to "Shipped," give it one full business day. Carriers often batch-scan items at the end of the day, and it takes time for their servers to communicate with Amazon's database. This is especially true during peak holiday seasons like Black Friday or Prime Day.

Use the Amazon Shopping App

Sometimes the mobile app is more updated than the desktop website. Open the Amazon app, go to "Your Orders," and tap on the specific item. The app often provides a "Map View" for Amazon Logistics (TBA) deliveries that might not show up on a standard web browser.

Amazon Logistics (TBA Numbers) Explained

If you see a tracking number starting with "TBA," this means the package is being delivered by Amazon’s own delivery fleet (Amazon Logistics). Unlike UPS or FedEx, you cannot track a TBA number on external websites. You must use the Amazon website or app. If the TBA number isn't "showing up" as a clickable link, it’s usually because the driver hasn't loaded the package onto their van yet.

What If the Package Is Late and There Is Still No Tracking?

If the "Estimated Delivery Date" has passed and there is still no tracking number showing up, you are protected by the Amazon A-to-z Guarantee. Amazon requires sellers to provide valid tracking for most orders. If they fail to do so and the item doesn't arrive, you are entitled to a full refund.

To claim this, you should first message the seller. If they don't respond within 48 hours, you can escalate the issue to Amazon Customer Service. They will typically issue a refund or a replacement immediately if the seller cannot prove the item was shipped with a valid tracking ID.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Why does my Amazon order say shipped but has no tracking ID?

This usually happens because the carrier has picked up the package but hasn't processed the paperwork through the system yet. It can also happen if the item was sent via a non-tracked shipping method like standard USPS First Class mail for small items.

2. How long should I wait for a tracking number to appear?

You should generally wait 24 to 48 hours after the order has been marked as "Shipped." If it hasn't appeared after two days, it is worth contacting the seller or Amazon support.

3. Can I cancel an order if the tracking number isn't showing?

If the order is already in the "Shipped" status, you cannot cancel it. However, if it is still "Preparing for Shipment" and the tracking number is missing, you can usually request a cancellation, although it is not guaranteed if the packing process has already begun.

4. Does Amazon always provide a tracking number?

While most orders do, it is not mandatory for every single item. Very small, inexpensive items sent via standard post by third-party sellers may not have tracking. However, items shipped directly by Amazon almost always include tracking.

Conclusion

Finding that your Amazon tracking number is not showing up can be frustrating, but in most cases, it is a temporary issue related to processing times or data syncing. Whether it's a delay in the carrier's system, a third-party seller using standard mail, or simply a software lag, your package is likely still on its way.

Always remember to wait at least 48 hours after the shipping notification before worrying. Use the Amazon app for the most up-to-date info, and never hesitate to reach out to Amazon Customer Support if your delivery window has passed. With the A-to-z Guarantee, your purchase is protected, ensuring that you either get your package or your money back.
