Colton Dach: The Rising Power Forward in the Chicago Blackhawks’ Evolution
The name "Dach" has been synonymous with high-level hockey prospects for several years, but while his older brother Kirby has made waves in Montreal, Colton Dach is carving out his own formidable path within the Chicago Blackhawks organization. As one of the most intriguing prospects in the AHL today, Colton Dach represents a blend of size, skill, and grit that is increasingly rare in the modern game. Today, we dive deep into his journey, his playing style, and why he is considered a cornerstone of the Blackhawks' massive rebuilding project.
In the high-stakes world of professional hockey, the transition from junior phenom to NHL regular is rarely a straight line. For Colton Dach, it has been a journey defined by explosive offensive output, leadership roles in the Western Hockey League (WHL), and a resilient battle against the injury bug. As the Chicago Blackhawks continue to surround superstar Connor Bedard with elite talent, Dach’s development in Rockford has become a primary focal point for the front office and fans alike.
The Early Years and WHL Dominance
Colton Dach’s journey to the professional ranks began in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. Growing up in a hockey-centric household, Colton was always pushed by the success of his brother, Kirby. However, Colton’s game developed differently. While Kirby was noted for his elite playmaking and vision, Colton established himself as a pure "power forward" with a lethal finishing touch.
During his time in the WHL, Dach played for the Saskatoon Blades and the Kelowna Rockets. It was in Kelowna where he truly blossomed into a leader. After being traded to the Rockets, he was named captain, a testament to his maturity and locker-room presence. In the 2021-22 season, he put up a staggering 79 points in 61 games, proving that his 6'4" frame wasn't just for checking—it was a platform for elite offensive production.
His final junior season saw him traded to the Seattle Thunderbirds, where he joined a "super-team" destined for a Memorial Cup run. Although injuries limited his games, his impact was undeniable. Whenever Dach was on the ice, the physicality of the game shifted in his team’s favor. He finished his WHL career with a reputation as a player who could dominate the cycle and score from anywhere in the "home plate" area in front of the net.
Scouting Report: What Makes Colton Dach Special?
When scouts talk about Colton Dach, the first thing they mention is his shot. Unlike many prospects who rely on volume, Dach possesses a "pro-level" release that is heavy and accurate. He can change the angle of his blade at the last millisecond, making it a nightmare for goaltenders to track his shots through traffic.
Physicality and Net-Front Presence
At 6'4" and over 200 pounds, Dach uses his reach to protect the puck with elite efficiency. In the modern NHL, "puck protection" is a premium skill. Dach excels at using his body to shield defenders while driving toward the net. He is not afraid of the "dirty areas" of the ice, often parking himself in the crease to hunt for rebounds or provide screens on the power play.
Hockey IQ and Versatility
While often labeled a power forward, Dach possesses a high hockey IQ. He understands lane assignments and is surprisingly adept at finding open teammates when the defense collapses on him. Furthermore, his versatility is a major asset; he is comfortable playing both center and wing, though the Blackhawks have primarily utilized him on the flank to maximize his shooting ability.
Professional Transition: The Rockford IceHogs Era
The jump from the WHL to the American Hockey League (AHL) is often cited as the hardest transition in hockey. Playing against grown men, many of whom have NHL experience, requires a shift in speed and decision-making. Colton Dach joined the Rockford IceHogs (the Blackhawks' AHL affiliate) and immediately showed flashes of brilliance.
In his rookie professional season, Dach maintained a scoring pace that placed him among the top rookies on the team. However, his progress has occasionally been hampered by health setbacks. From concussions to shoulder issues, Dach has dealt with more than his fair share of physical adversity. Despite this, his "trending update" remains positive. Every time he returns to the lineup, he seems to have added a new layer to his game—whether it’s improved defensive positioning or a faster first step in his skating stride.
The "Dach Brother" Dynamic: Comparisons to Kirby
It is impossible to discuss Colton without mentioning Kirby Dach. Kirby was a third-overall pick, while Colton was selected in the second round (62nd overall) in 2021. This draft position difference actually worked in Colton's favor, as it allowed him more time to marinate in junior hockey without the immediate "savior" pressure that Kirby faced in Chicago.
Stylistically, the brothers are quite different. Kirby is a pass-first center who thrives on transition play. Colton is a shoot-first winger who thrives on sustained zone time and physical puck battles. Interestingly, many analysts believe Colton’s game might actually be better suited for the "playoff style" of hockey, where space is tight and physicality is paramount.
Detailed Statistical Profile and Overview
To understand the value Colton Dach brings to the table, we must look at the specific aspects of his profile. The following table highlights the key data points that define his current standing in the professional hockey world.

Overcoming Injury: The Mental Grittiness of Colton Dach
Perhaps the most underrated aspect of Colton Dach’s career is his mental toughness. During the 2023 World Junior Championship, Dach suffered a heartbreaking injury while representing Team Canada. It was a moment that could have derailed a younger player's confidence. Instead, Dach used the rehabilitation time to build more muscle mass and study film.
Management in Chicago has praised his dedication to the training room. "Colton is a rink rat," said one Blackhawks development coach. "He wants to be out there for every shift, and he hates missing time. That hunger is what will eventually make him a full-time NHLer." His ability to bounce back from injuries and immediately produce at a high level is a trait that scouts look for when determining a player's "floor" and "ceiling."
Where Does He Fit in the Blackhawks' Future?
The Chicago Blackhawks are currently in the middle of one of the most publicized rebuilds in sports history. With Connor Bedard as the centerpiece, the goal is to build a supporting cast that can facilitate Bedard’s playmaking while providing the physical protection needed in a 82-game season. This is where Colton Dach fits perfectly.
Imagine a future Blackhawks top-six forward group. You have the speed of Frank Nazar, the generational talent of Bedard, and then you have Colton Dach—the "enforcer" who can also score 20-25 goals. Dach’s ability to retrieve pucks in the corner and get them to Bedard’s stick is a recipe for a decade of highlights. Furthermore, Dach's presence on the power play as a net-front screen allows the team's smaller skill players more room to operate on the perimeter.
The Road Ahead: 2024 and Beyond
As we look at "news trending update today," the consensus is that Dach is on the cusp of a permanent NHL call-up. Depending on the Blackhawks' trade deadline moves and health status, we could see Dach getting a significant look in the NHL's top-nine forward rotation. The organization is being patient, ensuring that he is 100% healthy and that his skating speed is up to the NHL's blistering pace.
The Evolution of the Power Forward
In the 1990s, power forwards were often just "goons" who could skate. In 2024, the definition has changed. A modern power forward must be able to handle the puck at high speeds and possess a sophisticated understanding of defensive structures. Colton Dach represents this new breed. He isn't just looking for a hit; he’s looking to create a turnover that leads to a high-danger scoring chance.
His development is also a sign of the Blackhawks' scouting success. Finding a player with his physical profile in the second round is a major "win" for a scouting department. If Dach reaches his potential, he will be seen as one of the biggest steals of the 2021 draft.
Conclusion: The Future is Bright for Dach
Colton Dach is more than just a prospect; he is a vital piece of the Chicago Blackhawks' identity moving forward. His journey through the WHL, his resilience in the face of injury, and his successful transition to the professional game in Rockford suggest that he is ready for the brightest lights in hockey. While he shares a name with an NHL star, Colton is proving that his game is unique, powerful, and essential for a championship-caliber roster.
As the Blackhawks continue their ascent back to the top of the NHL standings, expect Colton Dach to be a name you hear frequently. Whether he’s scoring a clutch goal or clearing space for his teammates, his impact on the ice is undeniable. For fans and analysts alike, the "Dach era" in Chicago is just getting started.
