How Do I Look Up An Amazon Tracking Number? A Complete Step-by-Step Guide
Online shopping has revolutionized the way we acquire everything from household essentials to the latest electronics. Amazon, being the global leader in e-commerce, provides a sophisticated logistics system to ensure your items arrive on time. However, the excitement of a new purchase often comes with a bit of anxiety: "Where is my package right now?" To answer that, you need your tracking number. If you are wondering, "How do I look up an Amazon tracking number?", you are in the right place. This guide will walk you through every method available to find and use your tracking details effectively.
Why You Need Your Amazon Tracking Number
While Amazon provides a built-in progress bar for every order, the actual tracking number (also known as a Tracking ID) offers much more granular detail. By obtaining this number, you can visit the specific carrier's website (like UPS, FedEx, or USPS) to see real-time updates, sign up for delivery alerts, or even redirect a package if the carrier allows it. Furthermore, if a package is delayed or lost, having the tracking number is the first piece of information customer service will request.
How to Find Your Tracking Number on the Amazon Website
If you are using a desktop or laptop, finding your tracking information is a straightforward process that takes less than a minute. Follow these steps:
- Log In: Go to the Amazon homepage and sign in to your account.
- Navigate to Orders: Click on the "Returns & Orders" button located in the top right corner of the screen.
- Locate Your Item: Scroll through your recent orders to find the specific item you want to track.
- Click 'Track Package': Next to the order details, you will see a yellow button labeled "Track Package." Click it.
- View Details: On the tracking page, you will see a visual progress bar. Look below this bar or to the side for a section labeled "Tracking ID" or "Tracking Number." The carrier name (e.g., Amazon, UPS, USPS) will be listed right next to it.
How to Look Up an Amazon Tracking Number via the Mobile App
Most Amazon shoppers prefer the convenience of the mobile app. The process is slightly different but equally simple:
- Open the Amazon Shopping app on your iOS or Android device.
- Tap the Profile icon (the person-shaped icon) at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap on the "Your Orders" button.
- Select the item you are interested in.
- Tap "Track Package."
- Scroll down to the "See all updates" section. Here, you will find the Tracking ID and the name of the shipping carrier.
Alternative Method: Using Your Confirmation Email
Whenever an Amazon order ships, the system automatically sends a notification email. If you don't want to log into the website, check your inbox for an email with the subject line "Your Amazon.com order of [Item Name] has shipped." Inside that email, there is usually a "Track your package" button. Clicking this will often take you directly to the tracking page where the number is displayed, even if you aren't currently logged into your browser.
Understanding Amazon Logistics (TBA Numbers)
One common point of confusion is when a tracking number starts with "TBA" followed by a string of digits. This indicates that the package is being delivered by Amazon Logistics, Amazon's own in-house delivery service. Unlike UPS or USPS, TBA numbers generally cannot be tracked on third-party websites. You must use the Amazon website or app to see the location of these packages. If you see a TBA number, you can often see a real-time map of the delivery driver’s progress once they are a few stops away from your house.
| Feature/Aspect | Description |
|---|---|
| Carrier Name | The company responsible for the delivery (e.g., UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL, or Amazon). |
| Tracking ID | The unique alphanumeric code assigned to your specific shipment. |
| Status Updates | Real-time logs showing when the package left the warehouse and arrived at local hubs. |
| Amazon Logistics (TBA) | Specific tracking for Amazon's own fleet; often includes a "Map View" for final delivery. |
What to Do If the Tracking Number Is Missing
Occasionally, you might find that the tracking number is missing or says "Tracking details not available." This can happen for several reasons:
- Standard Shipping: Some small or inexpensive items sent via standard mail or international carriers may not have a digital tracking ID.
- Processing Time: If the order just shipped, it might take 24 to 48 hours for the carrier to update their system with your tracking number.
- Marketplace Sellers: If you bought from a third-party seller (not fulfilled by Amazon), they may have used a shipping method that doesn't provide a tracking number to Amazon’s interface. In this case, you should contact the seller directly.
How to Track a Gift Without the Sender Knowing
If someone has sent you a gift, you won't see it in your "Your Orders" list. However, Amazon often sends a "A gift is on its way" email to the recipient if the sender provided your email address. This email contains a link to track the package. If you didn't get an email, you will have to ask the sender for the tracking number or wait for the surprise to arrive!
Advanced Tracking: Third-Party Tools
If you have multiple packages coming from different retailers, using an all-in-one tracking app can be helpful. Apps like "17Track" or "AfterShip" allow you to paste your Amazon tracking number (as long as it isn't a TBA number) and see updates alongside your orders from eBay, Walmart, or other stores. This is a professional-level way to manage your incoming deliveries without hopping between different websites.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Can I track an Amazon package by the Order Number?
No, the Order Number and the Tracking Number are different. The Order Number is for Amazon's internal billing and record-keeping, while the Tracking Number is for the physical shipping process. You cannot track a package on a carrier's website (like UPS) using only an Amazon Order Number.
2. Why is my Amazon tracking number not working on the USPS website?
This often happens if the package is in the early stages of transit. Sometimes Amazon uses "UPS Mail Innovations" or "FedEx SmartPost," where a private carrier handles the long-haul transit and USPS handles the final delivery. The tracking may not work on the USPS site until the package is physically handed over to your local post office.
3. What should I do if my tracking says "Delivered" but the package isn't here?
Wait at least 24 hours. Sometimes carriers mark a package as delivered when it arrives at the local hub or when it is still on the truck. Check with neighbors, look behind porch pillars, or check your "Delivery Photo" on the Amazon app to see where the driver left it. If it still hasn't appeared after 48 hours, contact Amazon Customer Service for a refund or replacement.
Conclusion
Finding your Amazon tracking number is a simple process that provides peace of mind and control over your deliveries. Whether you are using the desktop site, the mobile app, or checking your email, the information is usually just a few clicks away. By understanding the difference between third-party carriers and Amazon Logistics (TBA numbers), you can better interpret the tracking data provided. If you ever find yourself stuck without a tracking number, remember that Amazon’s customer support is highly responsive and ready to help you locate your items. Happy shopping!
