Roberto De Zerbi I _kissed_ Rodrigo Bentancur after red card, the _character_ that Spurs need

Roberto De Zerbi’s Bold Claim: Why He ‘Kissed’ Rodrigo Bentancur After Red Card and the Missing Character at Spurs

In the high-octane world of modern football, where tactical perfection often takes precedence over raw emotion, Roberto De Zerbi remains one of the few managers who wears his heart on his sleeve. Known for his revolutionary "De Zerbi-ball" and his intense touchline persona, the current Olympique de Marseille manager has once again sparked a global conversation. His recent comments regarding Tottenham Hotspur’s Rodrigo Bentancur have sent shockwaves through the Premier League and Ligue 1 alike. De Zerbi admitted to "kissing" Bentancur following a controversial red card incident, citing that the Uruguayan possesses the exact "character" that Spurs—and many modern teams—desperately lack.

This statement isn't just about a singular moment of madness or a display of affection; it is a profound commentary on the psychological state of elite football. As Tottenham struggles with consistency under Ange Postecoglou, De Zerbi’s observation highlights a growing debate: Can a team win titles with "nice guys," or do they need the "dark arts" and the fiery temperament of players like Bentancur? In this deep dive, we explore the nuances of De Zerbi’s philosophy, Bentancur’s role as a midfield enforcer, and why the "character" mentioned might be the missing piece in the North London trophy puzzle.

The Incident: Why De Zerbi Embraced the "Villain"

The incident in question occurred during a high-stakes encounter where Rodrigo Bentancur was dismissed for a second bookable offense—a challenge born out of pure frustration and a refusal to let the opponent transition. While most managers would lambaste their player for leaving the team shorthanded, De Zerbi saw something different. He saw a player who refused to accept defeat, a player whose heartbeat was synchronized with the urgency of the match.

"I kissed him because I saw myself in him," De Zerbi reportedly told journalists. "People see a red card and they see a mistake. I see a player who was willing to sacrifice his presence on the pitch to send a message to his teammates. Football is not just about passing patterns; it is about blood, fire, and soul. Rodrigo has that soul. He is the type of character that Spurs need if they want to stop being 'Spursy' and start being champions."

This perspective is quintessential De Zerbi. Having cut his teeth in the lower leagues of Italy before rising to prominence with Sassuolo, Brighton, and now Marseille, the Italian tactician has always prioritized "personality" over "compliance." To De Zerbi, a red card earned through passion is far more valuable than a clean sheet earned through passivity.

The Bentancur Paradox: Talent vs. Temperament

Rodrigo Bentancur has always been a polarizing figure. Since his move from Juventus to Tottenham, he has been arguably the most important cog in the Spurs midfield. His ability to break lines, his spatial awareness, and his tenacity in the tackle make him an elite "number 6" or "number 8." However, his career has also been marred by moments of disciplinary lapses and, more recently, off-field controversies including a significant ban from the FA for comments made regarding teammate Son Heung-min.

Despite these setbacks, on the pitch, Bentancur represents a "dying breed" of South American midfielders who combine technical elegance with a street-fighter mentality. For De Zerbi, this is the "character" that defines winners. At Spurs, a club often criticized for lacking a "winning DNA" or a "killer instinct," Bentancur stands out as a player who is unafraid of the confrontation.

The Tactical Value of "Aggressive Character"

In De Zerbi’s tactical framework, the defensive transition is the most vulnerable moment. He encourages his players to take risks, but when those risks fail, he demands an immediate, almost violent reaction to win the ball back. Bentancur’s "red card moment" was a manifestation of this philosophy. By stopping a counter-attack at any cost, the player protected the tactical integrity of the team, even if it meant an early shower.

Feature/Aspect	Description
Manager's Philosophy	Roberto De Zerbi prioritizes "emotional intelligence" and "on-pitch aggression" over rigid discipline.
Bentancur's Role	A high-intensity box-to-box midfielder who provides the "grit" in Tottenham's midfield.
The "Kiss" Symbolism	A gesture representing a manager's appreciation for a player's willingness to sacrifice for the team.
Spurs' Requirement	The need for a mental shift from "playing well" to "winning at all costs."
Disciplinary Record	While high, it reflects the defensive burden and intensity required in the Premier League.

Does Tottenham Lack a Ruthless Edge?

For decades, the narrative surrounding Tottenham Hotspur has been one of "style over substance." From the days of Glenn Hoddle to the current "Ange-ball" era, Spurs have rarely been accused of being boring. However, they have frequently been accused of being "soft." Under Mauricio Pochettino, they came close to shedding this skin, with players like Mousa Dembélé and Christian Eriksen providing a mix of steel and silk.

De Zerbi’s comments suggest that the current squad, while talented, lacks the "nasty" streak required to cross the finish line in major competitions. When Postecoglou speaks of his "non-negotiables," he often refers to attacking intent and courage on the ball. But De Zerbi is talking about a different kind of courage: the courage to be the villain, the courage to take a yellow card to stop a break, and the courage to demand more from teammates through sheer force of will.

Comparing the "Nice Guys" to the "Winners"

Look at the most successful Premier League teams of the last decade. Manchester City has Rodri, a master of the "tactical foul." Liverpool had Fabinho and currently has Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister, who aren't afraid to get stuck in. Chelsea’s best eras featured N'Golo Kanté and Diego Costa. These teams had players who could "switch off" the flair and "switch on" the fight. De Zerbi believes Bentancur is that switch for Spurs, and without him—or without more players like him—the ceiling for the club remains limited.

De Zerbi’s Managerial DNA: Why He’s Linked to the Big Jobs

It is no coincidence that Roberto De Zerbi’s name is constantly linked with clubs like Manchester City (as a potential Guardiola successor), Liverpool (before Slot), and indeed Tottenham before they appointed Postecoglou. His ability to coach a specific, complex style of play is world-class, but his ability to manage the *psyche* of his players is what sets him apart.

By publicly defending Bentancur’s red card and "kissing" him, De Zerbi is employing a psychological tactic known as "us against the world." It builds an unbreakable bond between player and manager. In Marseille, he is doing the same, transforming a historically volatile club into a cohesive unit through shared passion. This "character-first" approach is exactly what a high-pressure environment like Tottenham requires to end their trophy drought.

The "Character" Postecoglou Wants

While De Zerbi praises Bentancur, Ange Postecoglou has also defended his players' intensity. However, Ange’s focus is often on the "process." De Zerbi’s focus is on the "spirit." The intersection of these two philosophies is where the perfect modern team lives. If Spurs can harness Bentancur's fire without it leading to damaging suspensions, they might finally find the balance needed to compete with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City.

The Global Reaction: Fans and Critics Weigh In

The footballing world is divided on De Zerbi’s stance. Critics argue that glorifying a red card is "anti-football" and sets a bad example for younger players. They point to the fact that playing with ten men significantly reduces a team's win probability. On the other hand, former players and "old school" pundits have lauded De Zerbi’s honesty. They argue that the game has become too sterile and that seeing a manager embrace a player’s raw competitive drive is refreshing.

Spurs fans, in particular, are torn. They love Bentancur's work rate and passion but are frustrated by his frequent absences due to injury and suspension. Yet, the consensus among the Lilywhites' faithful is that the team looks significantly weaker—mentally and physically—whenever the Uruguayan is not in the starting lineup.

Conclusion: The Soul of the Game

Roberto De Zerbi’s "kiss" for Rodrigo Bentancur is a metaphor for a deeper truth in sport: tactics will get you to the final, but character will win you the trophy. As Tottenham continues its journey under Ange Postecoglou, the words of De Zerbi serve as a stark reminder that "playing the right way" involves more than just beautiful passing; it involves a relentless, sometimes ugly, commitment to victory.

Bentancur may be a "villain" to some for his disciplinary record, but to a manager like De Zerbi, he is a hero. He is the "character" that Spurs need—a player who understands that in the heat of battle, sometimes the most logical thing to do is the most emotional thing. Whether or not Spurs can find more players with this fire will likely determine if the "Ange-ball" era ends in silverware or just more "what-ifs."
