The punt block that unified New Orleans and a Falcons-Saints rivalry
The Punt Block That Unified New Orleans: Steve Gleason and the Birth of a Modern Falcons-Saints Rivalry
In the long, storied history of the National Football League, there are moments that transcend the boundaries of the gridiron. There are plays that do more than just shift the scoreboard; they shift the soul of a city. On September 25, 2006, inside a freshly renovated Louisiana Superdome, the New Orleans Saints did more than just defeat the Atlanta Falcons. They signaled to the world that New Orleans was still breathing, still fighting, and still capable of joy. The catalyst for this emotional resurrection was a single, lightning-fast play: Steve Gleason’s legendary punt block.
Today, as we look back on that Monday Night Football masterpiece, we recognize it as the foundational stone of the modern Saints-Falcons rivalry—a feud that is now widely considered the most vitriolic and competitive in the NFL. This is the story of how a special teams play became a symbol of urban survival and how a rivalry was forged in the fires of a city’s rebirth.
1. The Darkest Hour: New Orleans and the Superdome Before the Block
To understand the magnitude of Steve Gleason’s block, one must first understand the state of New Orleans in 2005 and 2006. Hurricane Katrina had devastated the Gulf Coast, leaving 80% of the city underwater. The Superdome, once a marvel of modern engineering, had become a "shelter of last resort" for thousands of citizens who had nowhere else to go. The images of the shredded roof and the suffering within its walls became the global face of the tragedy.
For thirteen months, the New Orleans Saints were a team without a home. They played "home" games in San Antonio, New York, and Baton Rouge. Many pundits and even some NFL owners believed the team would never return to New Orleans full-time. The city was seen by some as a lost cause, a ghost town that could no longer support a professional sports franchise. However, the resilience of the local population and the determination of the NFL to keep the team in place led to a massive $185 million renovation of the stadium in record time.
When the 2006 schedule was released, all eyes turned to Week 3: Monday Night Football against the divisional rival Atlanta Falcons. It wasn't just a game; it was a homecoming for a displaced people.
2. The Play Heard 'Round the World: Steve Gleason’s Rebirth
The atmosphere on September 25, 2006, was electric, bordering on spiritual. Before kickoff, U2 and Green Day performed "The Saints Are Coming," a performance that reduced many in the stands to tears. The air was thick with the weight of lost homes, lost loved ones, and a year of agonizing recovery. The Saints needed to show their fans that they were worth the wait.
Just ninety seconds into the game, the Falcons were forced into a three-and-out. Michael Koenen backed up to punt from the Atlanta 15-yard line. As the ball was snapped, a long-haired, unheralded special teams ace named Steve Gleason saw a gap in the protection. With a burst of speed and a perfectly timed dive, Gleason stretched his arms forward. The ball thudded against his hands almost the instant it left Koenen’s foot.
The ball bounced into the end zone, where Saints safety Curtis Deloatch pounced on it for a touchdown. The sound in the Superdome at that moment was described by many as a physical force—a wall of noise that had been building up for over a year. It wasn't just a touchdown; it was a cathartic scream of defiance. The Saints would go on to win 23-3, but the game was effectively over after Gleason’s block. The city had its spirit back.

3. Why the Falcons? Forging a Rivalry in Fire
The Saints and Falcons had been divisional rivals since the late 1960s, but before 2006, the rivalry was often overshadowed by other NFC matchups. However, the "Rebirth" game changed everything. For Saints fans, the Falcons became the perfect foil—the team that stood in the way of their recovery. For Falcons fans, the constant celebration of that one play for decades to come fueled a deep-seated resentment.
Since that night, the rivalry has grown into a spectacle of mutual disdain. Whether it’s the "28-3" jokes from New Orleans fans or the Falcons' attempts to spoil Saints' playoff hopes, the intensity is unmatched. The 2006 game set a standard: whenever these two teams meet, the stakes aren't just about a win or loss; they are about history and pride. The Gleason block ensured that New Orleans would always look at a game against Atlanta as something more than just football.
The Statistical Intensity
In the years following the block, both franchises reached new heights. The Saints, led by Drew Brees and Sean Payton, won Super Bowl XLIV. The Falcons, led by Matt Ryan, became perennial contenders and reached Super Bowl LI. This period of shared success only sharpened the rivalry. Every matchup became a battle for the NFC South crown, with the memory of Gleason’s block serving as the prologue to every clash.
4. The Legacy of Steve Gleason: Beyond the Field
The story of the punt block is inseparable from the personal journey of Steve Gleason. In 2011, Gleason was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Rather than retreating, Gleason used his platform to become a global advocate for those living with neuromuscular diseases. His foundation, "Team Gleason," has raised millions of dollars to provide technology and equipment for ALS patients.
In 2012, a bronze statue titled "Rebirth" was unveiled outside the Superdome. It depicts Gleason in mid-air, blocking the punt. It is not just a sports monument; it is a pilgrimage site for New Orleanians. It represents the moment the water receded and the hope returned. Gleason’s battle with ALS has only deepened the city's love for him, making him a living saint in a city that bears the same name.
The "Rebirth" Statue as a Cultural Landmark
Tourists and locals alike visit the "Rebirth" statue before every home game. It serves as a reminder that no matter how difficult the circumstances, a single act of effort can change the course of history. For the Saints-Falcons rivalry, the statue is a permanent scoreboard—a reminder of the night New Orleans proved it wasn't going anywhere.
