Viking 3-3 Bayern Munich Harry Kane beats Lionel Messi record in Champions League
Viking 3-3 Bayern Munich: Harry Kane Shatters Lionel Messi Record in Epic Champions League Draw
The UEFA Champions League has always been a stage for the extraordinary, but few could have predicted the sheer drama that unfolded at the SR-Bank Arena. In a match that will be remembered for years to come, Norwegian underdogs Viking FK held the German giants Bayern Munich to a pulsating 3-3 draw. However, the result on the scoreboard was almost secondary to the history made on the pitch. England captain Harry Kane officially surpassed a long-standing record held by Lionel Messi, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest strikers to ever grace European football.
The atmosphere in Stavanger was electric from the first whistle. Viking, entering the competition as massive outsiders, showed no fear against a Bayern Munich side that has dominated the Bundesliga and European landscapes for decades. But while the collective effort of the Norwegian side was commendable, the night belonged to Harry Kane. By scoring his second goal of the evening, Kane reached a milestone for goals scored in his first 50 Champions League appearances, eclipsing the previous mark set by the legendary Lionel Messi during his prime years at FC Barcelona.
The Record-Breaking Moment: Kane vs. Messi
For over a decade, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have sat atop the mountain of Champions League statistics. Messi, in particular, held the record for the most prolific start to a Champions League career in terms of goal-per-game ratio over his first 50 outings. However, Harry Kane’s clinical finishing since joining Bayern Munich has seen him accelerate past those numbers at a staggering rate.
Before the match against Viking, Kane was tied with Messi for goals through 49 appearances. When he slotted home a penalty in the 24th minute, he drew level. But it was his stunning 68th-minute volley that saw him pull clear. Kane now sits alone at the top of this specific statistical mountain, a testament to his longevity and his incredible adaptation to the tactical demands of Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich system. While Messi’s record was built on individual brilliance and intricate team play, Kane’s new record is a product of pure striking instinct and an unparalleled ability to find space in crowded penalty areas.
Analysts are already debating what this means for Kane’s legacy. Unlike Messi, who won multiple trophies during his record-setting run, Kane is still searching for that elusive Champions League winners' medal. Yet, on an individual level, the numbers do not lie. Kane is currently performing at a level of efficiency that rivals the greatest icons of the game.
Match Breakdown: A Six-Goal Thriller in Stavanger
The game itself was a tactical chess match that quickly turned into a chaotic firefight. Bayern Munich started the match with their trademark high press, looking to suffocate Viking in their own half. The breakthrough came early when Michael Olise delivered a pinpoint cross for Harry Kane to head home, setting the tone for what many thought would be a routine victory for the Bavarians.
However, Viking FK had other plans. Utilizing the vocal home crowd and the chilly Norwegian conditions, they hit back through a lightning-fast counter-attack. The Viking midfield showed incredible composure to bypass Bayern’s midfield pivot, eventually setting up Zlatko Tripic, who finished coolly past Manuel Neuer. The stadium erupted, and suddenly, the giants looked vulnerable.
The second half was even more frantic. Jamal Musiala restored Bayern’s lead with a solo effort that showcased his world-class dribbling, only for Viking to equalize again via a deflected set-piece. When Harry Kane scored his second—the record-breaking goal—to make it 3-2, it seemed the story was written. But in the 91st minute, Viking’s relentless pressure forced an error from Dayot Upamecano, leading to a dramatic equalizer that shared the points and left Bayern stunned.
Tactical Analysis: Why Bayern Struggled Against Viking
Under Vincent Kompany, Bayern Munich has adopted a very aggressive defensive line. While this allows them to dominate possession and create numerous chances, it also leaves them susceptible to teams with pace on the wings. Viking FK exploited this brilliantly. By sitting deep and inviting pressure, they created huge pockets of space behind Bayern's full-backs.
The absence of a truly pacey defensive recovery specialist was evident. While Kim Min-jae and Upamecano are physically imposing, the quick transitions of the Norwegian side caught them off guard multiple times. Furthermore, Bayern’s reliance on Harry Kane as the primary outlet means that when he is marked out of the game—or when the midfield fails to find him—the team can look stagnant. Despite Kane’s individual brilliance, the team’s defensive structure remains a work in progress for Kompany.

Harry Kane’s Evolution at Bayern Munich
Since moving to Germany, Harry Kane has transformed from a traditional "Number 9" into a complete forward who dictates the tempo of the game. His record-breaking night in Norway was not just about the goals; it was about his movement. Kane often dropped into the "Number 10" role to pick up the ball, allowing the likes of Leroy Sané and Serge Gnabry to make runs in behind.
Comparing this to Messi’s record, the Argentinian often benefited from the "tiki-taka" system of Barcelona where the ball would find him in the final third. Kane, by contrast, is often the architect of his own chances. His fitness levels at age 31 are remarkable, and he seems to have found a second wind in the Bundesliga. This record is a clear indicator that Kane is currently the most lethal finisher in world football, arguably even surpassing Erling Haaland in terms of all-around contribution to the team's play.
The Road Ahead: Champions League Implications
While the draw is a historic result for Viking, it leaves Bayern Munich in a slightly precarious position in the new Champions League league phase. Every point matters in the race for the top eight spots to avoid the playoff round. Bayern will need to tighten up their defense if they hope to challenge for the trophy in the final at the Allianz Arena later this year.
For Viking, this result serves as a warning to the rest of Europe. Small clubs are no longer just "making up the numbers." With disciplined tactical setups and physical intensity, they can challenge the elite. The Norwegian league is gaining respect, and performances like this will only increase the visibility of Scandinavian talent.
