Will Gta 5 Be Free On Epic Games
Will GTA 5 Be Free on Epic Games Store Again? Rumors, Historical Analysis, and Future Outlook
The gaming world was forever changed in May 2020 when the Epic Games Store (EGS) made an announcement that literally crashed their servers: Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5), one of the most successful entertainment products in history, was available for free. Since that legendary week, a recurring question has echoed through the halls of Reddit, Discord, and gaming forums: Will GTA 5 be free on Epic Games again?
In this comprehensive guide, we will dive deep into the mechanics of the Epic Games Store, the history of Rockstar Games’ distribution strategy, the financial logic behind free giveaways, and the probability of seeing GTA 5 return to the "Free" price tag as we approach the release of GTA 6. Whether you are a newcomer looking to jump into Los Santos or a veteran gamer tracking industry trends, this article provides everything you need to know about the potential for another GTA 5 giveaway.
The History of the 2020 Epic Games Store GTA 5 Giveaway
To understand the future, we must look at the past. On May 14, 2020, Epic Games replaced their usual weekly free title with a "Mystery Game." When the timer hit zero, it was revealed to be Grand Theft Auto V: Premium Edition. This wasn't just the base game; it included the Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack, giving new players $1,000,000 in in-game currency and various properties to kickstart their GTA Online careers.
The impact was immediate and chaotic. The Epic Games Store launcher and website went offline for hours due to the sheer volume of traffic. Millions of players claimed the game, proving that even seven years after its initial launch, the demand for GTA 5 remained astronomical. This move was a masterstroke for Epic Games, as it forced millions of users to install their launcher, and it was a win for Rockstar Games, as it flooded GTA Online with a fresh wave of players who might eventually spend money on Shark Cards.
Current Status: Is GTA 5 Free Right Now?
As of the current date, GTA 5 is not free on the Epic Games Store. It is currently listed at its standard retail price, though it is frequently included in "Epic Sales," where it can be purchased for as low as $14.99 or $19.99 depending on the region and the specific promotion. While the "Free Game" banner hasn't returned for this specific title, the game remains one of the top-selling items on the platform.
The Epic Games Store continues its tradition of giving away free games every Thursday at 11:00 AM ET. While these are usually indie titles or older AAA games (like Death Stranding, Control, or BioShock: The Collection), the "Mystery Game" events during the Holiday Season and Mega Sales are the only times when a high-profile title like GTA 5 is even considered for a free release.
The Business Logic: Why Give Away a Multi-Billion Dollar Game?
It might seem counterintuitive for a company to give away a product that still sells millions of copies every year. However, the partnership between Epic Games and Rockstar (Take-Two Interactive) is based on sophisticated data analytics. Here is why it makes sense:
- Player Base Expansion: GTA 5 is no longer just a single-player game; it is a gateway to GTA Online. By giving the base game away for free, Rockstar expands the ecosystem of potential spenders in the online world.
- Microtransactions (Shark Cards): The real revenue for Rockstar comes from GTA Online. A player who gets the game for free is statistically more likely to spend $10 or $20 on a Shark Card to buy a new supercar or business than a player who had to pay full price for the game.
- Epic Games Market Share: Epic pays publishers a "buyout fee" to make games free. By offering GTA 5, Epic successfully converted millions of Steam users to their platform, increasing their long-term market share against Valve.
| Fitur/Aspek | Deskripsi |
|---|---|
| Game Version | Usually the Premium Edition (includes Online & Starter Pack). |
| Claim Method | Permanent ownership once added to library. |
| Platform | PC (Windows) via Epic Games Launcher. |
| Cross-Play | Available with Steam and Rockstar Launcher players. |
| Requirement | Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is usually mandatory to claim. |
Predicting the Future: Will It Happen Again in 2024 or 2025?
Industry analysts are divided on whether GTA 5 will ever be free again on Epic Games. However, several factors suggest it is a possibility, specifically in the lead-up to the release of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6).
The GTA 6 Hype Cycle
Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA 6 is scheduled for a Fall 2025 release. Historically, publishers use free giveaways of older titles to build hype for an upcoming sequel. Making GTA 5 free again in late 2024 or early 2025 would put the franchise back in the global headlines, reminding everyone of the series' quality and ensuring that the Rockstar Games Social Club has the maximum number of active users before the new game drops.
The Subscription Model Shift
Another factor to consider is the rise of GTA+. Rockstar has been pushing its own subscription service heavily. If GTA 5 is offered for "free" again, it might be tied to a subscription service or a specific promotional event rather than a permanent "claim and keep" giveaway like the one in 2020. However, Epic Games prefers the "keep forever" model to build loyalty.
How to Be the First to Know if GTA 5 Becomes Free
If you don't want to miss out on the next potential giveaway, you need to be proactive. These deals usually only last for 7 days. Here is how to stay ahead of the curve:
- Enable Epic Games Notifications: Download the Epic Games Launcher and enable desktop notifications for "Free Game" alerts.
- Follow Social Media: Follow the official Epic Games Store Twitter/X account and Rockstar Games' official channels.
- Check during "Mega Sales": Epic usually hosts a Mega Sale in May and a Holiday Sale in December. These are the "Mystery Game" windows where high-value games are given away.
- Reddit Communities: Join subreddits like r/GameDeals or r/EpicGamesPC, where users track upcoming leaks and rumors.
System Requirements: Can Your PC Handle GTA 5?
Even if you get the game for free, you need to ensure your hardware can run it. While GTA 5 is an older game, the updates to GTA Online have made it slightly more demanding over the years. Below are the recommended specifications for a smooth experience.
Minimum Specifications:
- OS: Windows 10 64 Bit, Windows 8.1 64 Bit, Windows 8 64 Bit.

Alternatives to Waiting for a Free Epic Games Giveaway
If you are tired of waiting and want to play GTA 5 today, there are several ways to get the game at a very low cost. Because of its age, the game is frequently discounted across all platforms.
1. Steam Sales
Valve’s platform, Steam, holds major sales (Summer, Autumn, Winter). GTA 5 is almost always discounted to under $15 during these periods. While not free, it is a small price for hundreds of hours of content.
2. Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus
GTA 5 has rotated in and out of the Xbox Game Pass and PS Plus Extra/Premium catalogs several times. If you already pay for these subscriptions, you can often download and play the game as part of your membership without paying extra.
3. CD Key Resellers
Websites like Green Man Gaming, Humble Bundle, or Fanatical often offer legitimate Rockstar Launcher keys or Epic/Steam keys at a discount. Always ensure you are using a reputable seller to avoid account issues.
The Cultural Impact of "Free GTA 5"
The 2020 giveaway didn't just crash servers; it changed the perception of digital storefronts. It proved that the "Free-to-Play" model could be applied to premium AAA games as a marketing tool. For months after the giveaway, the number of "modders" and "griefers" in GTA Online spiked, leading to a debate within the community about whether free giveaways hurt the game's quality by allowing banned players to easily return with new accounts. This "dark side" of free games is something Rockstar likely considers when deciding whether to run the promotion again.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Is GTA 5 free on Epic Games right now?
No, GTA 5 is currently a paid title on the Epic Games Store. However, it frequently goes on sale for a significant discount.
2. If I claimed GTA 5 for free in 2020, do I still own it?
Yes! Once you claim a free game on the Epic Games Store during the promotional period, it stays in your library forever, just like a game you purchased.
3. Will there be a GTA 6 free giveaway?
It is highly unlikely that GTA 6 will be free at launch. Rockstar Games expects to sell tens of millions of copies on day one. A free giveaway for GTA 6 would likely not happen for many years after its release.
4. Does the Epic Games version of GTA 5 support mods?
Yes, the Epic Games version supports mods like Script Hook V and FiveM, though you must be careful when using them to avoid being banned from GTA Online.
5. Can I transfer my progress from Steam to Epic Games?
Yes, as long as you link the same Rockstar Games Social Club account to both platforms, your GTA Online progress (character, money, properties) will carry over.
Conclusion
While GTA 5 is not currently free on the Epic Games Store, the possibility of a return giveaway remains a hot topic of speculation. The 2020 event was a landmark moment in gaming history, benefiting both Epic's platform growth and Rockstar's Online ecosystem. With the 2025 release of GTA 6 looming on the horizon, Rockstar may very well decide to offer GTA 5 for free one last time to maximize their user base and create a final surge of momentum for the franchise.
Until then, the best strategy for gamers is to keep a close eye on the Epic Games Store "Mystery Game" events and seasonal sales. GTA 5 remains one of the greatest open-world experiences ever created, and whether you get it for free or for the price of a movie ticket, it offers unparalleled value in the world of interactive entertainment. Stay tuned to official channels, set your notifications, and you might just find yourself back in Los Santos without spending a dime.
