How Do I Find The Tracking Number On An Amazon Package
How Do I Find The Tracking Number On An Amazon Package? A Complete Step-by-Step Guide
Waiting for an Amazon package is often the highlight of a shopper’s week. Whether you have ordered a brand-new gadget, essential household supplies, or a gift for a loved one, the anticipation can be high. However, to manage that anticipation, you need to know exactly where your package is. This is where the tracking number comes into play. If you have ever found yourself wondering, "How do I find the tracking number on an Amazon package?" you are not alone. While Amazon makes the process relatively intuitive, the steps can vary slightly depending on whether you are using a desktop computer, a mobile app, or checking your email notifications.
In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through every possible method to locate your Amazon tracking ID. We will also discuss what those numbers mean, why some look different from others, and what to do if the tracking information seems to be missing. By the end of this article, you will be an expert at navigating Amazon’s logistics interface.
How to Find Your Tracking Number on the Amazon Website (Desktop)
For many users, the desktop website offers the most detailed view of their order history. Navigating the web interface is straightforward if you know where to click. Follow these steps to find your tracking number on a PC or Mac:
- Log in to Your Account: Open your preferred web browser, go to Amazon.com, and sign in using your credentials.
- Navigate to 'Returns & Orders': In the top right corner of the homepage, you will see a link labeled "Returns & Orders." Click on this to see a list of all your recent purchases.
- Locate the Specific Order: Scroll through your list of orders until you find the item you are looking for.
- Click 'Track Package': Next to the order details, there is usually a yellow button that says "Track Package." Click it.
- View Tracking Details: On the tracking page, you will see a progress bar. Look below or beside the progress updates. You will find a section labeled "Tracking ID" followed by a string of numbers and letters. This is your tracking number.
It is important to note that the tracking number will only appear once the item has actually been shipped. If the status is still "Preparing for Shipment" or "Not Yet Shipped," the tracking ID will not be generated yet.
Locating Your Tracking ID on the Amazon Mobile App
In today's fast-paced world, most of us track our packages on the go using the Amazon Shopping app. The process is slightly different but equally simple:
- Open the App: Launch the Amazon app on your iOS or Android device.
- Access the User Menu: Tap the three horizontal lines (the "hamburger" menu) or the person icon at the bottom of the screen.
- Select 'Your Orders': Tap on the "Your Orders" button to view your purchase history.
- Select the Item: Tap on the image or title of the package you want to track.
- Tap 'View Tracking Details': On the order summary page, tap the "View Tracking Details" link.
- Find the Tracking ID: Scroll down slightly. Under the shipping progress map or list, you will see the "Tracking ID." You can often long-press this number to copy it to your clipboard if you need to paste it into a carrier’s website.
Finding Tracking Numbers via Email Notifications
Amazon is excellent at keeping customers informed via email. Every time an order reaches a new milestone—confirmation, shipment, and delivery—you receive an automated message. Your tracking number is almost always included in the shipping confirmation email.
Search your inbox for phrases like "Your Amazon.com order has shipped." Open the email and look for a button that says "Track your package." While this button usually takes you back to the Amazon site, the raw tracking number is often listed in the text of the email as well. This is particularly useful if you want to check the status without logging into your Amazon account.
| Method/Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Amazon Desktop | Found under "Returns & Orders" > "Track Package." Best for detailed carrier info. |
| Amazon Mobile App | Accessible via the "Your Orders" tab. Convenient for quick updates on the go. |
| Shipping Email | A direct ID provided in the "Your order has shipped" notification sent to your inbox. |
| Amazon Logistics (TBA) | Tracking numbers starting with TBA are handled by Amazon's own delivery fleet. |
| Third-Party Carriers | Numbers for UPS, USPS, FedEx, or DHL that can be used on the carrier's official site. |
Understanding Different Types of Amazon Tracking Numbers
Not all Amazon tracking numbers look the same, and this is because Amazon uses a variety of carriers to deliver goods. Understanding who is carrying your package can help you interpret the tracking data more effectively.
1. Amazon Logistics (TBA Numbers)
If your tracking number starts with "TBA," "TBC," or "TBM," it is being handled by Amazon Logistics—Amazon's in-house delivery service. These numbers are unique because they usually cannot be tracked on third-party sites like 17Track or even the USPS website. You must track these directly through the Amazon "Track Package" page.
2. Standard Carriers (UPS, USPS, FedEx, DHL)
For many orders, Amazon partners with established global carriers. A USPS tracking number is usually 20-22 digits long, while UPS numbers often start with "1Z." These are highly useful because if the Amazon tracking page is lagging, you can copy these numbers and paste them directly into the carrier's official website for real-time updates.
3. Third-Party Marketplace Sellers
If you purchase from a third-party seller who handles their own shipping (instead of using Fulfillment by Amazon), the tracking number format will depend entirely on the carrier they choose. In some rare cases, small items sent via standard mail may not have a tracking number at all, though this is becoming less common.
Troubleshooting: Why Can't I Find My Tracking Number?
Occasionally, you might look for a tracking number and find nothing. There are several reasons why this might happen:
- The Order Has Not Shipped: As mentioned, tracking IDs are generated at the time of shipment. Check the "Expected Ship Date."
- Standard International Mail: Some low-cost international shipments do not include end-to-end tracking to save on shipping costs.
- Privacy Settings: If you are part of an Amazon Household, you might not see tracking for items ordered by another member unless they share the details with you.
- System Delays: Sometimes there is a 24-hour lag between the package being picked up and the tracking number being scanned into the system.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Why does my tracking number say 'Information Not Available'?
This usually happens when a label has been created but the carrier hasn't scanned the package into their system yet. Check back in 12 to 24 hours, and the status should update with the package's current location.
2. Can I track an Amazon package without the tracking number?
Yes, as long as you have access to your Amazon account. By clicking "Track Package" in your order history, Amazon provides a visual map and status updates regardless of whether you have copied the physical tracking ID or not.
3. Can I track an Amazon package on Google?
If you have a tracking number from UPS, FedEx, or USPS, you can simply paste the number into the Google search bar. Google will recognize the carrier and provide a direct link to the tracking results. Note: This does not work for Amazon Logistics (TBA) numbers.
Conclusion
Finding the tracking number on an Amazon package is a simple process once you know where to look. Whether you prefer using the desktop site, the mobile app, or your email, the information is always just a few clicks away. Knowing your tracking ID not only helps you stay informed about the delivery timeline but also provides peace of mind that your order is on its way. By understanding the difference between Amazon Logistics and third-party carriers, you can better manage your expectations and troubleshoot any delays that may arise. Happy shopping, and may your packages always arrive on time!
