Kellen Moore explains how RB-needy Saints lost Audric Estime
Kellen Moore Explains How RB-Needy Saints Lost Audric Estime
The NFL offseason and draft cycle are often defined by the "ones that got away." For the New Orleans Saints, a team grappling with an aging backfield and a desperate need for a youth infusion, the 2024 NFL Draft represented a critical juncture. At the center of their wishlist was Notre Dame standout Audric Estime, a bruising runner whose physical profile seemed tailor-made for the "Black and Gold." However, as the draft cards were turned in, Estime ended up in Denver, leaving New Orleans searching for answers. Recently, Philadelphia Eagles Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore, a respected voice in offensive architecture, provided a deep-dive explanation into the scouting dynamics and draft-day maneuvers that led to the Saints missing out on their prime target.
The Audric Estime Profile: Why He Was the Perfect Fit for New Orleans
Before diving into the "how" of the loss, it is essential to understand the "why" of the pursuit. Audric Estime wasn't just another running back prospect; he was a specific solution to a specific problem in New Orleans. Standing at 5'11" and weighing nearly 230 pounds, Estime built a reputation at Notre Dame as a "punisher." In his final collegiate season, he racked up over 1,300 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns, showcasing a blend of contact balance and surprisingly nimble footwork for a man of his stature.
For the Saints, the backfield situation has been increasingly precarious. While Alvin Kamara remains a versatile weapon, his efficiency as a pure "between-the-tackles" runner has naturally declined as he enters the veteran stage of his career. Meanwhile, the experiment with Jamaal Williams failed to yield the short-yardage reliability the team expected, and Kendre Miller’s injury woes have kept him from seizing a primary role. Estime was viewed as the "hammer" that could alleviate the pressure on Kamara and provide the Saints with a legitimate identity in the power-running game.
The Kellen Moore Perspective: Offensive Value and Draft Valuation
Kellen Moore, known for his analytical approach to play-calling and roster construction, highlighted that the "loss" of Estime wasn't just about a single pick, but about a fundamental disagreement in draft valuation. According to Moore, teams often categorize running backs into "specialty tiers."
"When you look at a guy like Audric, you aren't just looking at a 4.7-second 40-yard dash," Moore noted in a recent coaching seminar. "You're looking at his GPS tracking data and his ability to generate yards after contact. The Saints clearly valued him as a potential Day 2 starter. However, the disconnect often happens in the 'wait-and-see' approach. In the NFL, if you need a specific trait—like Estime’s power—you can’t afford to play the value game too long."
Moore suggests that the Saints' front office may have banked on Estime’s slower-than-average 40-yard dash time at the Combine to keep him available longer than he actually was. In reality, modern NFL teams like the Denver Broncos, under Sean Payton, prioritized "functional play speed" and "density" over track numbers.
| Fitur/Aspek | Deskripsi |
|---|---|
| Player Profile | Audric Estime, RB, Notre Dame (Physical Power Back) |
| Saints Primary Need | Power runner to complement Alvin Kamara and improve red-zone efficiency. |
| The "Kellen Moore" Factor | Analysis of how valuation gaps and "scouting bias" led to the Saints missing out. |
| Key Draft Statistic | Estime's 18 rushing TDs in 2023 made him a high-priority red-zone target. |
| Strategic Blunder | Relying on "Value Over Replacement" instead of aggressive talent acquisition. |
The "Sean Payton" Connection: A Bitter Pill for New Orleans
Perhaps the most stinging aspect of losing Audric Estime is where he landed. The Denver Broncos, led by former Saints legendary coach Sean Payton, were the ones to pull the trigger. Kellen Moore pointed out that Payton’s intimate knowledge of the Saints' offensive philosophy—and their current roster deficiencies—likely played a role in the Broncos' decision to jump on Estime.
"Sean Payton knows exactly what wins in the NFC South," Moore explained. "He knows that New Orleans needs to control the clock to help their defense. By taking Estime, Denver didn't just get a good player; they took a player they knew would have transformed the Saints' offensive ceiling."
This "scouting warfare" is a common theme in the NFL. When a former head coach moves to a new team, they often target the same "prototypes" they used to build their previous success. Estime fits the mold of the "big back" Payton utilized in New Orleans with players like Mark Ingram or Latavius Murray. The Saints, perhaps trying to move in a different direction under new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, may have hesitated, allowing their former mentor to swoop in.
The Analytics vs. Eye Test Debate: Why the Saints Hesitated
A significant portion of Moore’s explanation touched on the divide between traditional scouting and modern analytics. Audric Estime’s NFL Combine performance was polarizing. His 4.71-second 40-yard dash was in the bottom percentile for running backs, causing many "analytical" models to downgrade his pro potential. However, his "film" or "eye test" showed a player who was rarely caught from behind and who consistently broke the first tackle.
Kellen Moore suggests the Saints may have been "paralyzed by the data." While the Saints have integrated more analytics into their process, the fear of drafting a "slow" running back in an increasingly fast league might have caused them to prioritize other positions in the middle rounds. Meanwhile, the Broncos focused on Estime’s "contact balance," a metric that Moore argues is far more indicative of NFL success than a straight-line sprint in spandex.
What This Means for the Saints' 2024 Strategy
Missing out on Estime has forced the Saints into a "Plan B" scenario. This likely involves a heavier reliance on Alvin Kamara, which carries significant risk given his age and the physical toll of the position. It also puts immense pressure on Kendre Miller to stay healthy and prove he can be the "RB1" of the future.
Moore’s analysis indicates that the Saints might now be forced to look at the veteran free-agent market or late-season trades to find that physical presence they lack. "The margin for error in the NFL is razor-thin," Moore said. "When you identify a 'system fit' like Estime, you have to be the one to dictate the draft board, not react to it."
The Domino Effect: How One Missed Pick Changes an Offense
An NFL offense is a delicate ecosystem. When you miss a specific piece—like a power back—it affects everything from play-calling on 3rd-and-short to the effectiveness of the play-action pass. Without a credible threat to run between the tackles, opposing defenses can play "light boxes," dropping more defenders into coverage to bracket Alvin Kamara or the Saints' wide receivers.
Kellen Moore emphasized that for a quarterback like Derek Carr, having a player like Estime is a "security blanket." "Carr is at his best when the run game is working and he can utilize bootlegs and deep shots," Moore noted. "If the Saints can't establish that physical presence, Carr is going to be under a lot more duress, regardless of how well the offensive line performs."
Draft Day Communication Breakdown?
There are also reports and speculation, hinted at by Moore, regarding the communication within the Saints' "war room." In many instances, a team expects a player to fall to a certain pick based on "consensus" boards. When a team like Denver goes "off-board" to grab a player early, it can send a draft room into a tailspin. Moore suggests that the Saints might have been too rigid in their "value tiers," refusing to "reach" for Estime by 10 or 15 picks, even though he was the clear solution to their biggest personnel gap.
Conclusion: Lessons Learned from the Estime Saga
The story of how the Saints lost Audric Estime is a cautionary tale of draft-day valuation and the "chess match" between former colleagues. Kellen Moore’s insights highlight a growing trend in the NFL: the shift away from raw combine numbers toward functional, role-specific talent. For the Saints, the loss of Estime isn't just about losing a rookie; it's about the missed opportunity to redefine their offensive identity for the post-Sean Payton era.
As the 2024 season progresses, the Saints' rushing totals and red-zone efficiency will be compared directly to Estime’s production in Denver. If Estime thrives under Payton, the questions surrounding the Saints' front office and their inability to secure "their guy" will only grow louder. In the high-stakes world of the NFL, as Kellen Moore expertly explained, sometimes the greatest mistake isn't picking the wrong player—it's waiting too long to pick the right one.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: Why did the Saints need Audric Estime specifically?
A: The Saints needed a physical, high-volume "power back" to complement Alvin Kamara's speed and versatility. Estime’s ability to break tackles and score in the red zone was seen as the perfect fix for New Orleans' short-yardage struggles.
Q2: What was Kellen Moore’s main critique of the Saints' strategy?
A: Moore suggested that the Saints might have over-relied on Combine data (like Estime’s slow 40-yard dash) and "value tiers," rather than aggressively pursuing a player who was a perfect schematic fit.
Q3: How did Sean Payton influence this outcome?
A: As the former Saints coach, Payton knew exactly what the Saints' roster lacked. By drafting Estime for the Broncos, he secured a player he knew would have been a game-changer for his former team, effectively winning a "scouting battle" against his old club.
Q4: Who will the Saints rely on now that they missed out on Estime?
A: The Saints will lean heavily on Alvin Kamara, while hoping for a breakout, healthy season from second-year back Kendre Miller and improved production from veteran Jamaal Williams.
Final Thoughts: The NFL is a league of adjustments. While the "loss" of Audric Estime is a setback, the Saints must now prove they can adapt. Whether through schematic changes or late-season roster additions, the pressure is on the New Orleans coaching staff to ensure that their "RB-needy" status doesn't become the defining theme of their 2024 campaign.
