Meet Ezra Frech’s Parents: The Powerhouse Duo Behind the Paralympic Champion, Businessman Clayton Frech and Actress Bahar Soomekh
The world of sports often celebrates the individual athlete standing on the podium, draped in gold, and basking in the glory of a hard-fought victory. However, behind every elite athlete is a support system that fueled their journey from the very beginning. For Paralympic gold medalist and world record holder Ezra Frech, that support system is nothing short of extraordinary. To understand the resilience, charisma, and competitive drive of Ezra Frech, one must look at his parents: Clayton Frech, a visionary businessman and advocate, and Bahar Soomekh, a critically acclaimed Hollywood actress and social activist.
Ezra Frech has become a household name following his sensational performance at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, where he secured gold in the men's 100m T63 and the high jump T63. While his physical feats are breathtaking, his story is deeply rooted in the philosophy of his household—a place where "disability" was never seen as a limitation, but rather as a unique platform for change. This article delves deep into the lives of Clayton Frech and Bahar Soomekh, exploring how their diverse backgrounds in business and entertainment merged to create a legacy of empowerment for their son and thousands of other adaptive athletes.
The Architect of Opportunity: Who is Clayton Frech?
Clayton Frech is far more than just a "sports dad." He is a strategic thinker, a businessman, and a pioneer in the world of adaptive athletics. Before becoming a leading figure in the Paralympic movement, Clayton built a career in the corporate and entrepreneurial sectors. However, the birth of his first son, Ezra, in 2005, fundamentally shifted his professional trajectory.
Ezra was born with congenital limb differences—missing his left knee and shinbone (fibula) and having only one finger on his left hand. When Ezra was two years old, his parents made the difficult but life-altering decision to have his lower left leg amputated so he could be fitted with a prosthetic, which would eventually allow him to run, jump, and compete. Clayton didn't just want Ezra to "get by"; he wanted him to excel.
Recognizing a massive gap in the sports world for children with physical disabilities, Clayton founded Angel City Sports in 2013. The organization began with the Angel City Games, which has grown into one of the largest multi-sport Paralympic competitions in the United States. Through Clayton’s leadership, the organization provides free equipment, coaching, and competitive opportunities for children, adults, and veterans with physical disabilities. His business acumen allowed him to scale a local initiative into a national movement, proving that sports are a universal right.
The Business of Advocacy
Clayton’s approach to his son's career and the broader adaptive sports community is rooted in professional management. He treats the development of adaptive sports with the same rigor one might apply to a tech startup or a multinational corporation. By securing partnerships with major brands and city officials in Los Angeles, Clayton has ensured that the "Angel City" brand is synonymous with excellence and inclusion. His work ensures that athletes like Ezra have the stages they deserve to showcase their elite talents.
From Hollywood to Home: The Journey of Bahar Soomekh
While Clayton provides the organizational backbone, Bahar Soomekh provides a legacy of storytelling, cultural depth, and fierce maternal advocacy. Born in Tehran, Iran, to a Persian-Jewish family, Bahar moved to the United States as a child to escape the aftermath of the Iranian Revolution. This early experience of displacement and adaptation likely contributed to the resilience she would later instill in her children.
Bahar Soomekh is a familiar face to cinema lovers. She rose to international prominence with her role in the Academy Award-winning film Crash (2004), where she played Dorri. Her performance was praised for its emotional depth and nuance. She followed this success with a starring role as Dr. Lynn Denlon in the horror blockbuster Saw III and appeared alongside Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible III. Despite a burgeoning career in Hollywood, Bahar’s priorities shifted when Ezra began his journey into competitive sports.
A Mother’s Intuition and Activism
Bahar has often spoken about the emotional journey of raising a child with physical differences. She has been Ezra’s fiercest protector and his loudest cheerleader. Beyond the screen, Bahar has utilized her platform to advocate for environmental causes and social justice. She is known for her work with organizations like Green Cross International and has been a vocal proponent of inclusion in the media.
In the Frech household, Bahar’s background in the arts has translated into a focus on communication and mental fortitude. She has helped Ezra navigate the pressures of being a public figure from a young age, ensuring that he remains grounded while reaching for the stars. Her transition from a full-time actress to a full-time advocate and "Paralympic mom" is a testament to her dedication to her family’s mission.
The Power Couple: A Synergy of Skills
The success of the Frech family is a result of the unique synergy between Clayton and Bahar. They are often seen together at track meets, international competitions, and gala events, presenting a united front. Their marriage, which began in 2001, has been tested by the challenges of medical surgeries and the stresses of elite sports, but it has only grown stronger.
Together, they have created a home environment that emphasizes "The Frech Way"—a philosophy of relentless positivity and the belief that life is about what you can do, not what you can't. They have two other sons, Gabriel and Leo, who are equally involved in the family's mission, ensuring that Ezra’s journey is a shared family experience rather than an individual pursuit.

Raising a Global Icon: The Frech Parenting Philosophy
What makes Clayton and Bahar stand out as parents is their refusal to let Ezra be treated as "fragile." From the moment Ezra was fitted with his first prosthetic, they encouraged him to play every sport imaginable—basketball, soccer, karate, and track. They understood that for Ezra to feel truly empowered, he needed to compete against both able-bodied and adaptive athletes.
Clayton often mentions that their goal was never to win gold medals, but to build a "whole human being." By exposing Ezra to the realities of his condition early on and involving him in the creation of Angel City Sports, they gave him a sense of purpose that goes beyond personal accolades. Ezra isn't just jumping for himself; he is jumping for the kid watching at home who was born just like him.
Bahar’s influence is evident in Ezra’s eloquence and comfort in front of the camera. He is a natural spokesperson, a skill he undoubtedly honed by watching his mother navigate the world of Hollywood. Together, the Frech parents have raised a son who is as comfortable giving a keynote speech as he is clearing a 1.97m bar in the high jump.
The Impact of Angel City Sports on the Paralympic Movement
It is impossible to talk about Clayton Frech without mentioning the monumental impact of Angel City Sports. What started as a way to find a community for Ezra has turned into a lifeline for thousands. The organization provides more than just sports; it provides a sense of belonging. Through clinics, competitive events, and equipment grants, Clayton has dismantled the financial and social barriers that often prevent people with disabilities from being active.
The success of Angel City Sports has also placed the Frech family at the center of the preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Clayton is a key voice in ensuring that the LA28 games are the most accessible and impactful in history. This legacy is a direct result of a father’s love for his son and his professional drive to fix a broken system.
Bahar Soomekh’s Cultural Legacy
Bahar’s journey from post-revolutionary Iran to the red carpets of Hollywood adds a layer of "the American Dream" to the family story. Her success as a Persian-Jewish woman in an industry that was often not inclusive paved the way for her to be a strong advocate for her son. She brings a global perspective to the family's mission, reminding us that the struggle for inclusion is a worldwide endeavor.
