Canadiens’ Beck Squares Off With Lizotte After Laying Big Hit: High Intensity in Preseason Action
The Montreal Canadiens’ preseason is often a crucible where young prospects attempt to forge their path into the NHL spotlight, and Owen Beck did exactly that in a recent high-stakes matchup. In a game defined by its physical edge and competitive fire, Owen Beck found himself at the center of the storm after delivering a thunderous body check that reverberated through the arena. The hit, while clean, drew the immediate ire of veteran Blake Lizotte, leading to a heated confrontation that signaled a "no-nonsense" attitude from both sides. This incident has sparked intense debate among fans and analysts alike, highlighting the fine line between aggressive play and the unwritten "code" of the NHL.
The Spark: Analyzing the Hit and the Confrontation
The sequence began in the neutral zone, where Owen Beck, known for his high hockey IQ and two-way reliability, saw an opportunity to close the gap on a transition play. As the opposing player looked down to corral a bouncing puck, Beck lined him up with a textbook shoulder-to-chest hit. The impact was significant, sending the player to the ice and momentarily silencing the crowd. However, the silence was short-lived. Blake Lizotte, now donning the Pittsburgh Penguins jersey after a successful stint in Los Angeles, took exception to the hit on his teammate.
Lizotte, despite being one of the smaller players on the ice, has built a reputation on tenancity and leadership. He immediately challenged the young Beck, leading to a "squaring off" moment where gloves were dropped and jerseys were tugged. While the actual exchange of punches was brief, the message was clear: in the NHL, even in the preseason, young players will be held accountable for physical dominance. For Beck, it was a "welcome to the big leagues" moment that showcased his willingness to stand his ground against a seasoned veteran.
Who is Owen Beck? The Rising Star Demanding a Spot
Owen Beck has been a name on the lips of Montreal Canadiens fans since he was drafted 33rd overall in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. A standout in the OHL with the Mississauga Steelheads and later the Saginaw Spirit, Beck led his team to a Memorial Cup championship, earning the tournament MVP honors. His transition to the professional level is one of the most anticipated storylines in Montreal this season.
Beck is not your typical "flashy" prospect. He is often described as a "coach's dream" due to his prowess in the faceoff circle, his defensive positioning, and his ability to play in all situations. However, what this recent incident with Lizotte highlights is an edge to his game that some scouts felt was the missing piece. By playing a physical, abrasive style, Beck is proving that he can contribute more than just defensive stability; he can be an intimidating presence that makes the Canadiens harder to play against.

Blake Lizotte’s Veteran Response: Leadership in Action
For Blake Lizotte, the decision to square off with Owen Beck wasn't just about the hit itself; it was about culture. Joining the Pittsburgh Penguins this offseason, Lizotte knows that his role extends beyond the scoresheet. On a team featuring icons like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, the depth players are tasked with protecting the stars and maintaining a competitive environment.
Lizotte’s reaction is a classic example of "The Code" in hockey. Even if a hit is legal, if it is deemed too hard or occurs during a preseason game where players are trying to avoid injury, a teammate often steps in. By challenging Beck, Lizotte demonstrated to his new teammates and coaching staff that he is fully invested in the team's collective safety and morale. It also served as a litmus test for Beck, forcing the rookie to show whether he could handle the extracurricular pressure that comes with playing a physical game in the NHL.
The Evolution of Physicality in the Montreal Canadiens’ Rebuild
Under the leadership of GM Kent Hughes and Head Coach Martin St. Louis, the Montreal Canadiens have been undergoing a strategic rebuild. While much of the focus has been on skill and speed (represented by players like Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki), there is a growing recognition that the Atlantic Division is a "heavy" division. To compete with the likes of the Florida Panthers and the Boston Bruins, Montreal needs players who aren't afraid to initiate contact.
Owen Beck’s hit and subsequent fight are emblematic of the "new-look" Canadiens. The team is no longer content to be pushed around. With young defensemen like Arber Xhekaj already establishing themselves as enforcers, seeing a center like Beck involve himself in the physical side of the game suggests a cultural shift. The Canadiens are aiming to become a team that is both skilled and difficult to play against—a combination that is essential for long-term playoff success.
Training Camp Battles: The Fight for a Roster Spot
As the preseason progresses, the competition for the final roster spots in Montreal is reaching a fever pitch. Owen Beck is in a direct battle with other young forwards and veterans on PTOs (Professional Tryouts). While his defensive metrics are elite for his age, the coaching staff is looking for "intangibles."
Engaging in a physical confrontation after a big hit shows the staff that Beck has the emotional maturity and physical toughness to handle an 82-game NHL schedule. It proves he won't back down when the games get "heavy." For the Penguins, Lizotte's actions solidify his place as a trusted veteran who can help guide their younger players through the rigors of the Metropolitan Division.
Strategic Implications for the 2024-2025 NHL Season
This incident also highlights the strategic shift in how teams approach the preseason. Coaches are looking for more than just goals; they are looking for chemistry and "buy-in." When a player like Lizotte sticks up for a teammate, it accelerates the bonding process in a new locker room. Conversely, when a prospect like Beck plays with an edge, it forces the opposing team to adjust their game plan, often leading to more turnovers and scoring opportunities for the Canadiens.
Looking forward, Beck's performance in these physical moments might influence whether he starts the season in Montreal or with the Laval Rocket in the AHL. If he can continue to provide this blend of defensive responsibility and physical presence, it will be very difficult for Martin St. Louis to send him down. The Canadiens need centers who can win draws and kill penalties, but they also need centers who can set the tone physically.
FAQ Section
Q1: Was Owen Beck penalized for the hit on the player?
A: In most cases involving these types of hits, if the contact is shoulder-to-shoulder and the head is not the primary point of contact, no penalty is assessed for the hit itself. However, both Beck and Lizotte received penalties for the subsequent altercation (fighting/roughing).
Q2: Why did Blake Lizotte challenge Beck if the hit was clean?
A: In NHL culture, "The Code" often dictates that a player must answer for a hit that is particularly heavy or delivered to a star player/vulnerable teammate, regardless of its legality. It is a way of policing the game internally.
Q3: What are Owen Beck's chances of making the Montreal Canadiens' opening night roster?
A: Beck is considered a "on-the-bubble" player. While he has the skill set to play in the NHL, the Canadiens may choose to have him play top-line minutes in the AHL (Laval Rocket) to continue his development rather than limited minutes in the NHL.
Conclusion: A Statement Made
The confrontation between Owen Beck and Blake Lizotte was more than just a preseason scrap; it was a snapshot of two players at different stages of their careers fighting for the same thing: respect and a role within their respective teams. For Beck, the big hit and the willingness to square off showed that he is ready for the physical demands of the NHL. For Lizotte, it was a display of the leadership and grit that the Pittsburgh Penguins expect from their veteran additions.
As the Montreal Canadiens continue their journey back to contention, moments like these serve as building blocks. They build identity, they build toughness, and they build a team that opponents fear to face. Whether Beck starts the season in the NHL or the AHL, one thing is certain: he has made his presence felt, and the hockey world is taking notice. Fans should expect more of this high-intensity play as the regular season approaches, with both teams looking to establish their dominance early on.
