Why Do Hotels Put A Cloth On The Bed
Why Do Hotels Put a Cloth on the Bed? The Mystery of Bed Runners Explained
If you have ever checked into a hotel room, you have likely noticed a narrow, decorative strip of fabric laid across the foot of the bed. It isn't large enough to be a blanket, and it isn't tucked in like a sheet. So, what exactly is it? Often referred to as a "bed runner" or "bed scarf," this seemingly simple piece of fabric serves several crucial roles in the hospitality industry, ranging from hygiene to high-end interior design.
To the average traveler, the bed runner might seem like an unnecessary accessory. However, for hotel managers and housekeeping staff, it is a strategic tool designed to maintain the longevity of expensive linens and enhance the guest experience. In this comprehensive guide, we will dive deep into the functional and aesthetic reasons why hotels continue to use these cloths on their beds.
What is the Purpose of a Hotel Bed Runner?
The primary reason hotels put a cloth on the bed is protection. While it may look purely decorative, its functional origins are rooted in the habits of travelers. Most people, upon entering a hotel room after a long journey, have a tendency to toss their suitcases or backpacks directly onto the bed to unpack. Others might sit on the edge of the bed or even lie down for a quick nap without removing their shoes.
Hotel linens are typically crisp, bright white. This is done to prove cleanliness to the guest. However, white fabric is incredibly susceptible to scuff marks, dirt, and stains from luggage wheels or shoe soles. The bed runner acts as a sacrificial layer. It is placed exactly where shoes and suitcases are most likely to land, shielding the expensive duvet cover or sheets underneath from immediate soiling.
1. Hygiene and Protection Against Germs
In a post-pandemic world, hygiene is at the forefront of every traveler’s mind. The bed runner plays a silent but vital role in keeping the sleeping area sanitary. Think about where your suitcase has been: airport floors, taxi trunks, and sidewalk pavements. When you place that suitcase on a bed, you are transferring millions of bacteria directly onto the surface where you sleep.
By providing a designated "clothed" area at the foot of the bed, hotels encourage guests to keep their belongings off the white linens. Furthermore, because bed runners are made from more durable, often stain-resistant materials, they can handle the wear and tear of daily contact better than high-thread-count cotton sheets can.
2. The Shift from Bedspreads to Modern Bedding
To understand why we use bed runners today, we have to look at the history of hotel bedding. Decades ago, most hotels used heavy, patterned bedspreads that covered the entire bed. These were often made of thick polyester and were rarely washed—sometimes only a few times a year. This became a major hygiene concern for guests.
In the early 2000s, many major hotel chains (led by Westin’s "Heavenly Bed") shifted toward the "Triple Sheet" or "All-White" bedding method. This involved using white sheets and white duvet covers that could be laundered at high temperatures after every single guest. However, a completely white bed can look a bit sterile, like a hospital room. The bed runner was introduced as the modern solution: it adds the color and style of the old bedspreads without the hygiene drawbacks, as it is much easier to swap out and clean.
3. Enhancing Aesthetic Appeal and Branding
Interior design is a massive part of the hospitality experience. A hotel room needs to feel cozy, luxurious, and visually appealing. A plain white bed, while clean, lacks "pop." Designers use bed runners to introduce color, texture, and pattern into the room’s decor.
- Color Coordination: The runner often matches the window curtains, accent chairs, or artwork in the room, creating a cohesive design language.
- Branding: Luxury hotels may embroider their logo or a specific motif onto the bed runner to reinforce their brand identity.
- Texture: Using materials like velvet, silk, or heavy brocade adds a sense of tactile luxury that guests appreciate.
| Feature/Aspect | Description |
|---|---|
| Official Name | Bed Runner or Bed Scarf. |
| Primary Material | Polyester, Silk, Velvet, or Poly-blends for durability. |
| Functional Role | Protects white linens from shoes, suitcases, and pets. |
| Aesthetic Role | Adds a "pop" of color and completes the room's interior design. |
| Maintenance | Easier and cheaper to wash than a full-size duvet cover. |
4. Cost-Efficiency for Hotel Management
From a business perspective, bed runners are a stroke of genius. A high-quality down duvet and its matching white cover can be very expensive. Replacing a duvet cover because of a single permanent stain from a suitcase wheel is a waste of money. A bed runner is significantly cheaper to replace if it becomes permanently damaged.
Additionally, washing a massive duvet cover requires significant energy, water, and time. A bed runner is small and takes up very little space in industrial washing machines. This allows hotels to keep their "signature look" while keeping operational costs and environmental impact lower than they would be with traditional full-sized bedspreads.
Psychology of the "Finished" Room
There is also a psychological element at play. When a guest walks into a room, the bed is the focal point. A bed that is just white sheets can look "unfinished" or even "stripped." The addition of the cloth at the foot of the bed signals to the guest that the room has been professionally prepared and is ready for their arrival. It gives the room a "finished" look that feels more like a home and less like a temporary dwelling.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Am I supposed to sleep with the bed runner on the bed?
No, you are not generally expected to sleep with the bed runner. Most guests choose to fold it and place it on a chair or in the closet before going to sleep. Since its main purpose is to protect the bed from shoes and luggage during the day, it serves no functional purpose once you are under the covers.
2. Do hotels wash the bed runners after every guest?
This depends on the hotel's individual policy. While high-end luxury hotels typically launder all decorative elements between guests, some mid-range or budget hotels may only wash them on a weekly basis or if they appear visibly soiled. If you are concerned about germs, it is always a good idea to move the runner off the bed upon arrival.
3. Why are most hotel beds white if they get dirty so easily?
Hotels use white bedding because it is "evidence of clean." You cannot hide a stain or a hair on white fabric. It gives guests peace of mind knowing the sheets are fresh. The bed runner is simply the tool used to help keep those white sheets in pristine condition for as long as possible.
4. Can I buy a bed runner for my home?
Absolutely! Many people adopt this hotel trend at home to protect their comforters from pets or to add a designer touch to their bedroom without the expense of buying a whole new bedding set.
Conclusion
The "cloth on the bed" is far more than just a random piece of fabric. Whether you call it a bed runner or a bed scarf, its presence is a testament to the balance between form and function in the hospitality industry. It protects expensive white linens from the dirt of the outside world, provides a splash of much-needed color to room decor, and offers a cost-effective way for hotels to maintain high standards of cleanliness.
Next time you walk into a hotel room and see that neatly placed strip of fabric, you will know its secret: it’s there to keep your bed clean, your room stylish, and the hotel's operations running smoothly. Just remember—before you crawl into bed for the night, it’s probably best to toss it onto the armchair!
