‘Fourth Wing’ Finds Its Violet & Xaden: Esther McGregor & Emilio Sakraya To Lead Prime Video Series
The wait is finally over for the millions of fans of Rebecca Yarros’s blockbuster "Empyrean" series. Amazon MGM Studios has officially announced the primary casting for the highly anticipated television adaptation of ‘Fourth Wing.’ Breaking the internet across BookTok and entertainment circles alike, the news confirms that Esther McGregor will portray the resilient Violet Sorrengail, while Emilio Sakraya has been tapped to play the brooding and lethal Xaden Riorson. This casting milestone marks a pivotal moment for Prime Video as it seeks to bring one of the most successful "Romantasy" novels of the decade to life on the small screen.
Who Are the New Faces of Basgiath War College?
The search for Violet and Xaden was rumored to be one of the most intensive casting calls in recent fantasy television history. Given the passionate fanbase of the source material, the producers needed actors who could embody the complex physical and emotional demands of the characters.
Esther McGregor as Violet Sorrengail
Esther McGregor, daughter of legendary actor Ewan McGregor, takes on the role of Violet Sorrengail. Violet is a character defined by her intellect and hidden strength. Born with a chronic condition that makes her bones brittle and hair silver-tipped—widely recognized by fans as a representation of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome—Violet is forced by her mother, General Lilith Sorrengail, to join the deadly Dragon Rider quadrant instead of the Scribe quadrant. McGregor, who previously appeared in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, brings a fresh, ethereal quality to the role that matches Violet’s description in the books. Her casting signals a commitment to finding a lead who can balance vulnerability with the fierce determination needed to survive Basgiath.
Emilio Sakraya as Xaden Riorson
The role of the powerful, shadow-wielding wingleader Xaden Riorson has been awarded to Emilio Sakraya. The German-born actor and musician is no stranger to intense physical roles, having starred in Netflix’s 60 Minutes and Tribes of Europa. Sakraya possesses the commanding screen presence and "darkly handsome" look that readers have associated with Xaden. As the son of a high-profile traitor, Xaden’s relationship with Violet is fraught with tension, danger, and eventually, intense romance. Chemistry reads were likely a significant factor in this selection, as the dynamic between Violet and Xaden is the heartbeat of the narrative.
The Creative Powerhouse Behind the Scenes
Amazon MGM Studios is not holding back on the production value for ‘Fourth Wing.’ The series is being developed under the watchful eye of showrunner Moira Walley-Beckett, known for her incredible work on Anne with an E and Breaking Bad. Her involvement suggests a series that will prioritize character depth and emotional stakes alongside high-octane action.
Furthermore, the production is a collaboration with Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society and Amazon MGM Studios. This partnership ensures that the series has the budget and creative backing to handle the extensive CGI required for the dragons—Tairn, Andarna, and Sgaeyl—which are just as important to the story as the human leads. Author Rebecca Yarros is also serving as an executive producer, a move that has greatly comforted fans who want the adaptation to remain faithful to the spirit of the books.

Why ‘Fourth Wing’ is the Next Fantasy Phenomenon
The ‘Fourth Wing’ novel was a lightning-in-a-bottle moment for the publishing industry. It blended the high stakes of The Hunger Games with the dragon-riding lore of Eragon and the adult romantic tension of modern fantasy. The series focuses on Basgiath War College, an elite military academy where students must bond with dragons or die trying. The world-building involves a complex system of "Signets"—supernatural powers granted by dragons to their riders—and a geopolitical conflict involving the kingdom of Navarre and the mysterious "venin."
For Prime Video, this series represents a strategic play to capture the "Romantasy" market, which has grown exponentially thanks to social media platforms like TikTok. With The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time already in their catalog, ‘Fourth Wing’ adds a more romance-focused epic fantasy that appeals to a diverse and highly engaged demographic.
Character Dynamics: Violet and Xaden
The central hook of the story is the "enemies-to-lovers" trope executed with high-stakes peril. Xaden is tasked with supervising the new cadets, including Violet, whose mother was responsible for the execution of Xaden’s father. This creates a lethal friction between the two leads. Violet, initially seen as the "weakest" link due to her physical fragility, must use her cunning to survive, while Xaden operates in the shadows with his own hidden agenda. The casting of McGregor and Sakraya will need to convey this layers-deep chemistry and mutual respect that evolves over the course of the first season.
What Fans Can Expect from the Adaptation
With casting now in place, pre-production is expected to move into high gear. Fans are particularly anxious to see how the dragons will be portrayed. Tairn, the massive Black Morningstar dragon, and Andarna, the golden feather-tail, are fan favorites. The bond between rider and dragon is telepathic, meaning the show will likely utilize voice-over elements and state-of-the-art visual effects to depict these internal and external relationships.
The pacing of the show is also a topic of discussion. The first season is expected to cover the events of the first book, detailing Violet's first year at Basgiath, from the "Parapet" walk to the shocking finale that sets the stage for the sequel, Iron Flame. Given the density of the plot, fans are hoping for an 8-to-10 episode season to allow the world-building to breathe.
The Significance of Representative Casting
One of the most praised aspects of the book series is the representation of chronic illness through Violet. Esther McGregor’s portrayal will be under intense scrutiny to ensure this aspect of the character is handled with sensitivity and accuracy. Similarly, the world of Navarre is described as diverse, and the casting of Emilio Sakraya, who is of German and Moroccan descent, aligns with the inclusive vision Rebecca Yarros established in her writing.
