‘Mr. Irrelevant’ Co-Stars David Corenswet & Isabel May Kick Off Press Tour Early with MTV VMAs 2026 Appearance

The glitz and glamour of the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) reached a fever pitch last night, but the biggest buzz didn't come from a chart-topping musician. Instead, the spotlight was stolen by David Corenswet and Isabel May, the stars of the highly anticipated film ‘Mr. Irrelevant’. In a calculated and brilliant marketing move, the duo appeared together on the red carpet, effectively kicking off their global press tour months ahead of the film's scheduled release. This early appearance has sent shockwaves through social media, signaling that Skydance and the production team are betting big on the chemistry between the new Superman lead and the 1883 breakout star.

A Night of Surprises: Why the VMAs?

Traditionally, film press tours begin roughly four to six weeks before a movie hits theaters. However, the landscape of entertainment marketing is shifting toward "event-based" hype. By choosing the 2026 MTV VMAs as their launchpad, the team behind Mr. Irrelevant tapped into a younger, hyper-digital demographic. David Corenswet, who has become a household name following his debut as the Man of Steel, and Isabel May, whose prestige TV background has earned her a cult following, represented the perfect "cross-over" appeal.

The VMAs have always been a place where music and cinema collide. In 2026, the ceremony focused heavily on the intersection of visual storytelling and sound. Corenswet and May weren't just attendees; they presented the award for "Best Direction," using their stage time to subtly drop hints about their upcoming project. The chemistry was palpable, with insiders reporting that their off-screen friendship is just as compelling as their on-screen romance in the film.

Understanding the ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ Phenomenon

For those not steeped in American sports culture, the term "Mr. Irrelevant" refers to the final player drafted in the NFL Draft. While the title sounds disparaging, it has become a badge of honor, celebrating the underdog who makes it to the big leagues against all odds. The film Mr. Irrelevant is a cinematic adaptation of this concept, focusing on the life of John Tuggle or a fictionalized equivalent (details remain tightly guarded) who defied expectations.

David Corenswet plays the titular lead, a role that requires a blend of physical prowess and vulnerable humanity. Isabel May plays the female lead, a character described as the "emotional anchor" of the story. During their VMA interviews, May noted that the film is "less about football and more about the human spirit and the refusal to be defined by a label." This thematic depth is likely why the studio is pushing for an early awards-season buzz, starting with high-profile appearances like the VMAs.

David Corenswet: From Superhero to Underdog

David Corenswet’s career trajectory is currently one of the most interesting in Hollywood. Having successfully navigated the immense pressure of taking over the Superman mantle in the DC Universe, Corenswet is now diversifying his portfolio. Mr. Irrelevant offers him a chance to showcase his range beyond capes and flight. His appearance at the VMAs showed a more relaxed, "boy-next-door" charm that aligns perfectly with the underdog persona of his new character.

Industry analysts suggest that Corenswet is being positioned as the "next great American leading man." His choice of Mr. Irrelevant is strategic; it’s a grounded, character-driven story that contrasts with the CGI-heavy spectacles of superhero cinema. At the VMAs, he was seen wearing a tailored but understated suit, perhaps a nod to the "blue-collar" roots of his character in the film.

Isabel May: The Rising Queen of Prestige Drama

Isabel May has been a name to watch since her hauntingly beautiful performance as Elsa Dutton in 1883. She possesses a timeless quality that works equally well in 19th-century Westerns and modern-day dramas. In Mr. Irrelevant, she moves into the blockbuster space without losing the indie sensibility that made her a critic's favorite. Her fashion choice at the 2026 VMAs—a bold, metallic avant-garde gown—signaled her readiness for the global superstar stage.

The collaboration between May and Corenswet is being hailed as "the casting of the year." Their shared screen time in the snippets shown during the VMA pre-show suggests a level of intimacy and realism that is often missing from modern sports dramas. May’s ability to convey complex emotions with just a glance will likely be the secret weapon of Mr. Irrelevant.

The Marketing Strategy: Why an Early Press Tour?

The 2026 media landscape is noisier than ever. With AI-generated content, streaming wars, and a constant cycle of viral trends, major studios are finding it harder to sustain interest in a film. Starting the press tour early—specifically at a music event—serves three main purposes:

1. Viral Velocity: Moments from the VMAs are sliced into TikToks and Reels instantly. By appearing now, the actors become part of the cultural conversation months before the first trailer drops.
2. Brand Association: Associating a sports drama with the high energy of the VMAs helps "cool-ify" the genre, attracting viewers who might not typically watch a sports movie.
3. Building the "Ship": Hollywood thrives on "shipping" (the desire for fans to see co-stars together). Corenswet and May’s public appearance fuels fan theories and engagement.

The Evolution of Sports Movies in 2026

Mr. Irrelevant arrives at a time when sports movies are undergoing a renaissance. Following the success of films like Air and Challengers, audiences are craving stories that look at the periphery of sports—the business, the ego, and the failures. The story of the last-picked player in the draft is the ultimate narrative for this era. It’s a story about resilience in the face of being told you are "least likely to succeed."

The production, led by Skydance Sports, reportedly utilized cutting-edge cinematography to make the football sequences feel visceral and immersive. However, the buzz from the VMAs suggests that the marketing will lean heavily on the "heart" of the film rather than the "huddle."

What to Expect from the ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ Press Tour

Following their VMA appearance, Corenswet and May are rumored to be heading to London and Tokyo for a series of "sneak peek" fan events. Unlike traditional tours that focus on talk shows, this tour is expected to incorporate interactive fan experiences and digital-first content. We can expect more "unfiltered" social media interactions, behind-the-scenes vlogs, and perhaps a collaboration with major music artists—given their starting point at the VMAs.

Conclusion: A New Era of Cinema Promotion

The early press tour kickoff for Mr. Irrelevant at the 2026 MTV VMAs is a masterclass in modern SEO and hype-building. By pairing two of the industry's most exciting young talents and placing them in a high-energy, non-traditional environment, Skydance has ensured that their film is the topic of conversation long before the first whistle blows. David Corenswet and Isabel May have proven they are not just actors, but powerful icons capable of commanding any stage—whether it's a football field, a superhero set, or a neon-lit music awards show.

As we move closer to the release of Mr. Irrelevant, the "irrelevance" of the title becomes increasingly ironic. If the VMA appearance is any indication, this film is set to be one of the most relevant cultural touchstones of 2026 and 2027.
